Harvard Scientists Develop Large-Scale Organic Battery

Posted on: 03/10/2014
Harvard scientists have developed a battery made from small organic (carbon-based) molecules called quinones that can store large amounts of electrical energy.

The metal-free flow battery relies on the electrochemistry of quinones, which are naturally abundant and inexpensive, and similar to molecules that store energy in plants and animals. The researchers report that the new battery already performs as well as vanadium flow batteries, with chemicals that are significantly less expensive, and with no precious metal electrocatalyst.
