Electronic Materials that Melt Away
Posted on: 04/10/2014
“Transient materials” or “transient electronics” are special polymers designed to quickly and completely melt away when a trigger is activated. This fairly new field of study is the focus of one research team’s work at Iowa State University that recently published its progress on developing degradable polymer composite materials that are suitable platforms for electronic components. “Investigation of electronic devices based on transient materials (transient electronics) is a new and rarely addressed technology with paramount potentials in both medical and military applications,” the researchers commented.
Potential applications include being able to signal lost credit cards to self-destruct, medical devices that can harmlessly melt away inside the body once their job is done, and environmental sensors that can collect climate information and then was away in the rain.
