Professional Recognition Program

The recognition of outstanding accomplishments by members of the international minerals, metals, and materials community is one of the primary objectives of The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS).

In the society's view, the bestowment of honors and awards is necessary to not only reward distinguished performance by a scientist or engineer but to encourage his or her colleagues to strive toward the same--and perhaps a greater--level of distinction.

TMS members may also be interested in reviewing the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers (AIME) site for additional award opportunities. AIME recognizes outstanding achievement in technology, research, production, development and administration through the conferring of several major achievement awards.

To nominate a deserving professional for one of several honors and awards bestowed by TMS, complete the Nomination Form and send to TMS along with any supporting papers.

Nominations must be received according to the timeline and deadlines as listed.

X TMS Society-Level Awards

EARLY CAREER FACULTY FELLOW AWARD Recognizes: An assistant professor for his or her accomplishments that have advanced the academic institution where employed, and for abilities to broaden the technological profile of TMS. Criteria: (1) Tenure-tracked assistant professor employed at an educational institution; (2) demonstrated accomplishments in advancing the academic institution; (3) abilities in broadening the technological profile of TMS with the goal of engaging members in relevant activities; (4) availability to attend two TMS annual meetings, make a presentation and organize a symposium. Notes: (1) Applicant need not be a member of TMS; (2) Applicants with interests in nontraditional or traditional TMS programming topics are encouraged to apply. Deadline to Apply: October 31 Application: This award requires the submission of an application. The application form and submission instructions may be downloaded as portable document format files.

APPLICATION TO PRACTICE AWARD Recognizes: An individual who has demonstrated outstanding achievement in transferring research results or findings into commercial production and practical use. Criteria: Demonstrated outstanding achievement in transferring research results or findings in some aspect of the fields of metallurgy and materials into commercial production and practical use as a representative of an industrial, academic, governmental, or technical organization.

JOHN BARDEEN AWARD Recognizes: An individual who has made outstanding contributions and is a leader in the field of electronic materials. Criteria: (1) Established record of research and publications in the field of electronic materials; (2) recognizes the quality and relevance of work that has had or is likely to have a significant and lasting impact in the field of electronic materials.

BRUCE CHALMERS AWARD Recognizes: An individual who has made outstanding contributions to the science and technology of solidification processing. Relevant technologies in solidification processing include crystal growth, casting and rapid solidification processing; welding; soldering and brazing; vapor and spray deposition; and compositing techniques involving vapor or liquid infiltration. Criteria: (1) Must have an established record of research and publications in the field of solidification processing; (2) recognizes the quality and relevance of work that has had or is likely to have a significant and lasting impact on the development of the discipline (not intended to recognize lifetime contributions).

CHAMPION H. MATHEWSON AWARD Recognizes: A paper, or series of closely related papers with at least one common author, which represents the most notable contribution to metallurgical science in the award period. Criteria: (1) A paper or series of closely related papers with at least one common author; (2) the paper(s) must have been published in Metallurgical Transactions A or B or any other TMS publication within the two-year period ending on October 31, the nomination deadline each year.

DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD Recognizes: A member's outstanding contributions to TMS. Criteria: (1) Must be a member of TMS; (2) must have exhibited devotion of time, effort, thought, and action toward furthering the Society's mission through administrative/functional activities. (This award is typically presented for 10 or more years of TMS service. For example, service could be in one or more of the following areas: membership development, student chapters, education and professional affairs, or other Society-level activities. Members of the TMS Board of Directors are not eligible while in office and must be off the board at the time the award is considered.)

EDUCATOR AWARD Recognizes: An individual who has made outstanding contributions to education in metallurgical engineering and/or materials science and engineering. Criteria: (1) demonstrated contributions to education in metallurgical engineering and/or materials science and engineering; (2) not limited to classroom teachers; also recognizes contributions through writing of textbooks, building of strong academic programs, outreach to high school students, or innovative ways of educating the general populace.

FELLOW AWARD Recognizes: Members of TMS who are qualified for elevation to the Class of Fellow by reason of outstanding contributions to the practice of metallurgical science and technology. Criteria: (1) Must be a full member of TMS for at least five continuous years; (2) must have a good personal reputation and distinction as an eminent authority in some aspect of the practice of metallurgy as follows: (a) broad and productive scholarship in production, manufacturing, engineering applications, science, teaching, or management as evidenced by (i) the publication of articles and books of merit on metallurgical work supervised or done by the nominee, (ii) the granting of patents to the nominee on scientific and technical developments in materials, process methods or equipment in various fields of metallurgy, (iii) direction of important research or engineering work, and (iv) responsibility through management for nationally known metallurgical improvements and developments; (b) outstanding service to TMS shall be considered in rating nominees who are otherwise qualified. Members of the TMS Board of Directors are not eligible while in office.

ROBERT LANSING HARDY AWARD Recognizes: A young person in the broad fields of metallurgy and materials science for exceptional promise of a successful career, rather than for any specific accomplishment. (The broad field of metallurgy includes minerals processing, extractive, physical or adaptive metallurgy, and metal processing.) Criteria: 1) a candidate may not reach his/her 35th birthday by December 31 of the year in which the initial nomination is made; 2) must be a member of TMS; 3) exceptional promise for a successful career.

WILLIAM HUME-ROTHERY AWARD Recognizes: A scientific leader for exceptional scholarly contributions to the science of alloys by inviting him/her to be an honored presenter at the William Hume-Rothery Memorial Symposium. The awardee participates with the Alloy Phase Committee in organizing this symposium held in conjunction with the TMS Annual Meeting approximately two years following selection. Criteria: Exceptional scholarly contributions to the science of alloys.

INSTITUTE OF METALS LECTURER & ROBERT FRANKLIN MEHL AWARD Recognizes: An outstanding scientific leader by inviting him/her to present a lecture at the Society's Annual Meeting on a technical subject of particular interest to members in the materials science and application of metals program areas. Criteria: Outstanding scientific leadership.

LEADERSHIP AWARD Recognizes: An individual who has demonstrated outstanding leadership in the national and international materials community in some aspect of the fields of metallurgy and materials. Criteria: Exceptional leadership in the fields of metallurgy and materials as a representative of an industrial, academic, governmental, or technical organization.

STUDENT AWARDS & SCHOLARSHIPS The Society also presents awards to its student members including best paper awards and scholarships. Winners of these awards are featured in the student newsletter Professional Preface.

X TMS Division-Level Awards

ELECTRONIC, MAGNETIC & PHOTONIC MATERIALS DIVISION (EMPMD) DISTINGUISHED SCIENTIST/ENGINEER AWARD Sponsoring Division: EMPMD Division Recognizes: An individual for research excellence in one or several areas related to electronic, magnetic, and photonic materials science; technological impact; broad, sustained commitment to teaching or mentoring; service to TMS and/or the profession; and impact upon governmental or policy-making bodies. The EMPMD Honorary Symposia will be organized in honor of this individual.

ELECTRONIC, MAGNETIC & PHOTONIC MATERIALS DIVISION (EMPMD) DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD Sponsoring Division: EMPMD Division Recognizes: An individual whose continuous service to the Electronic, Magnetic, and Photonic Materials Division activities has clearly facilitated the Society’s capability to serve its EMPMD members and their supporting organizations Criteria: 1) full member of TMS for a minimum of 10 years; 2) active in one or several areas related to electronic, magnetic, and photonic materials science in academia, governmental institution, or industry; 3) a recognized leader through consistently and proactively advancing the service capability of EMPMD; and 4) recognized to be of the highest personal integrity and competence level.

EXTRACTION & PROCESSING DIVISION DISTINGUISHED LECTURER AWARD Sponsoring Division: Extraction & Processing Division Recognizes: An outstanding scientific leader in the field of nonferrous extraction and processing metallurgy by inviting him/her to present a comprehensive lecture at the Society's Annual Meeting. Criteria: The recipient will present a lecture on a technical subject of particular interest to the extraction and processing metallurgy members of the Society at the Annual Meeting approximately two years following selection for the award.

EXTRACTION & PROCESSING DIVISION DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD Sponsoring Division: Extraction & Processing Division Recognizes: An individual who has demonstrated outstanding long-term service to industries served by the Extraction and Processing Division by consistently providing technical and/or operating knowledge that has enhanced the competitiveness of the industry. Criteria: 1) full member of TMS for a minimum of ten years; 2) active in the extraction and processing industry and/or related entities for a minimum of 20 years; 3) a recognized leader through contributions to academia, industry and/or government through demonstrated leadership in the organization of symposia, service in committees, publications, patents and industrial practice.

EXTRACTION & PROCESSING DIVISION SCIENCE AWARD Sponsoring Division: Extraction & Processing Division Recognizes: a paper, or series of closely related papers with at least one common author, which represents a notable contribution to the scientific understanding of extraction and processing metallurgy, with emphasis on nonferrous metals. Criteria: (1) A paper or series of closely related papers with one common author in the field of extraction and processing metallurgy with emphasis on nonferrous metals; (2) the paper(s) must have been published in JOM, Metallurgical Transactions A or B, or any other appropriate AIME publication within the two-year period preceding May 31.

EXTRACTION & PROCESSING DIVISION TECHNOLOGY AWARD Sponsoring Division: Extraction & Processing Division Recognizes: A paper, or series of closely related papers with at least one common author, which represents a notable contribution to the advancement of the technology of extraction and processing metallurgy, with emphasis on nonferrous metals. Criteria: (1) A paper or series of closely related papers with one common author in the field of extraction and processing metallurgy with emphasis on nonferrous metals; (2) the paper(s) must have been published in JOM, Metallurgical Transactions A or B,or any other appropriate AIME publication within the two-year period preceding May 31.

LIGHT METALS DIVISION AWARD Sponsoring Division: Light Metals Division Recognizes: The individual excellence of a paper presented in the preceding year in a Light Metals Division sponsored session at the Annual Meeting. Criteria: (1) The paper must be presented in the preceding year in a Light Metals Division sponsored session at the Annual Meeting; (2) the paper must exemplify the application of science in solving a practical problem, and therefore must be technological in nature and present new and significant information; (3) the style must be clear and concise.

LIGHT METALS DIVISION DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD Sponsoring Division: Light Metals Division Recognizes: An individual whose continuous service to TMS Light Metals Division activities has clearly facilitated the Society’s capability to serve its light metals-oriented members and their supporting organizations. Criteria: 1) full member of TMS for a minimum of 10 years; 2) active in the light metals industry and/or related entities for a minimum of 20 years; 3) must have record of consistently and proactively advancing the service capability of the Light Metals Division; 4) recognized to be of the highest personal integrity and competence level.

LIGHT METALS DIVISION SUBJECT AREA AWARDS Sponsoring Division: Light Metals Division Recognizes:The individual excellence of a paper within a specific subject area presented in the preceding year in a Light Metals Division sponsored session at the Annual Meeting. Criteria: 1) the paper must be presented in the preceding year in a Light Metals Division sponsored session at the Annual Meeting; 2) the paper must exemplify the application of science in solving a practical problem, and therefore must be technological in nature and present new and significant information; 3) the style must be clear and concise.

LIGHT METALS DIVISION JOM BEST PAPER AWARD Sponsoring Division: Light Metals Division Recognizes: the author(s) of a paper published in an issue of the preceding volume year of JOM under a light metals related technical topic.

LIGHT METALS DIVISION TECHNOLOGY AWARD Sponsoring Division: Light Metals Division Recognizes: an individual who has demonstrated outstanding long-term service to the light metals industry by consistently providing technical and/or operating knowledge that has enhanced the competitiveness of the industry. Criteria: 1) the knowledge/information provided must have been readily available to the industry. 2) the knowledge/information must have advanced the competitiveness of the industry against other materials.

LIGHT METALS DIVISION MAGNESIUM AWARD Sponsoring Division: Light Metals Division Recognizes: The individual excellence of a paper published in the preceding year’s volume of Magnesium Technology Criteria: 1) the paper must be published in the preceding year’s volume of Magnesium Technology; 2) the paper must be presented during the Annual Meeting of the publication year; 3) the paper must exemplify the application of science in solving a practical problem, and therefore must be technological in nature and present new and significant information; 4) the style must be clear and concise.

MATERIALS PROCESSING & MANUFACTURING DIVISION DISTINGUISHED SCIENTIST/ENGINEER AWARD Sponsoring Division: MPMD Division Recognizes: An individual who has made a long lasting contribution to: design, syntheses, processing and performance of engineering materials, with significant industrial applications. Criteria: 1) Must be a member of TMS for at least ten years; 2) must have made prolonged contributions to the design, syntheses, processing and performance of engineering materials such as metals, ceramics composites, glasses and polymers through publications, patents, etc.; research must have demonstrated direct impact on commercial processes and products; 3) must have a superior standing among peer group.

MATERIALS PROCESSING & MANUFACTURING DIVISION DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD Sponsoring Division: MPMD Division Recognizes: an individual whose dedication and commitment to the TMS-MPMD has made a demonstrable difference to the objectives and capabilities of the division and the society. Criteria: 1) Must be a member of TMS for a minimum of ten years; 2) active in the field of design, syntheses, processing and performance of engineering materials; 3) a recognized leader through contributions to academia, industry and/or government through demonstrated leadership in the organization of symposia, service in committees and the council, publications, patents and industrial practice.

STRUCTURAL MATERIALS DIVISION DISTINGUISHED SCIENTIST/ENGINEER AWARD Sponsoring Division: Structural Materials Division Recognizes: An individual who has made a long lasting contribution to the fundamental understanding of microstructure, properties and performance of structural materials for industrial applications. Criteria: (1) Must be a member of TMS for at least five years; (2) must have made prolonged contributions to the science of structural materials such as metals, ceramics, composites, glasses and polymers through publications, patents, etc.; research must have demonstrated direct input on commercial processes and products; (3) must have a superior standing among peer group.

STRUCTURAL MATERIALS DIVISION DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD Sponsoring Division: Structural Materials Division Recognizes: An individual whose dedication and commitment to the TMS Structural Materials Division (SMD) has made a demonstrable difference to the objectives and capabilities of the division and the society. Criteria: (1) Must be a member of TMS for a minimum of ten years; (2) active in the field of structural materials; (3) a recognized leader through contributions to industry, academia and/or government through technical presentation, publications, etc.

X TMS Foundation Awards

SHRI RAM ARORA AWARD The award will recognize, encourage, and support the quest for knowledge within the materials science and engineering community. The submission information and Application Form for the Shri Ram Arora Award are available for download in portable document format. Note that the application and submission deadlines for this award differ from the others described on this page. Criteria: 1) Must reside in India, or be of Indian heritage currently residing in other country; 2) should be a graduate student majoring in materials science or a related field, or of post-doctoral status and actively involved in materials research; 3) may not have reached his/her 30th birthday by the submission deadline of July 1. Consists of: 1) Cash award of $1,000 to be used at the recipient’s discretion; 2) reimbursable travel, accommodation, and registration expenses, up to $1500, only to attend the TMS Annual Meeting

X Joint Awards with Other Societies

ACTA MATERIALIA GOLD MEDAL AWARD This is an international award presented by Acta Materialia, Incorporated. Nominations may be submitted through TMS or sent directly to Acta Materialia, Incorporated. Recognizes: An outstanding contributor to materials science. Criteria: (1) Demonstrated ability and leadership in materials research; (2) publication of work in Acta Materialia or Scripta Materialia is not required. Consists of: Engraved gold medal and certificate.

TMS/ASM JOINT DISTINGUISHED LECTURESHIP IN MATERIALS & SOCIETY AWARD Nominations may be submitted through either the TMS or ASM headquarters offices by April 1 each year. Recognizes: An individual experienced in a policy-making role in the field of materials engineering for our nation and its industries, an eminent individual with an overview of technology and society affected by development in materials engineering; a person associated with government, industry, research, or education. Criteria: To present a lecture that will clarify the role for materials engineering in technology and in society in its broadest sense, to present an evaluation of progress made in developing new technology for the changing needs of technology and society, and to define new frontiers for materials engineering. Consists of: Certificate with citation.
