The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) is a member-driven professional society consisting largely of student, professional, and retired scientists and engineers seeking to promote the global science and engineering professions concerned with minerals, metals, and materials. Read the TMS 2007 Annual Report.

The society derives its strength from these members, many of whom take a hands-on approach to shaping the policy, programming, and publications of the society through volunteer opportunities.

TMS MEMBERSHIP PROFILE

In general, membership is evenly divided between process- and material-oriented practitioners. The society is also of an increasingly international character, with about 33 percent of members living and working outside of the United States. Industry, government, and academia are all represented in the membership. A generalized profile of membership is

  • Professional Members – 40%: Professional Members are involved in activities associated with materials science and/or engineering. In general, Professional Members are required to hold at minimum of a baccalaureate degree in metallurgy, metallurgical engineering, materials science, materials engineering or a related field and be actively engaged in professional career experience. Professional membership includes a three-year program designed to make Professional Membership affordable during a new graduate's early career years. Professional Membership is complimentary for the first year following graduation. For the second and third years, the cost is 50% off the full Professional Membership dues. The early years of career development can be a trying time. The society strives to enable a lasting relationship with younger members as the professional partner of choice.
  • Associate Members – 13%: An Associate Member is a person who, while not possessing the academic or technical experience of a Professional Member, is active in fields that are sufficiently related to the advancement of, or service to, the materials science and engineering fields.
  • Material Advantage Student Members – 34%: Through a program called Material Advantage, graduate & undergraduate students who join are jointly enrolled as members in TMS – The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society, the Association for Iron and Steel Technology (AIST), ASM International, and The American Ceramic Society (ACeRs). They enjoy a variety of benefits including society journals, membership directories, and are eligible for nearly $600,000 in scholarships.
  • Senior Members – 13%: Reflecting an achieved rank with the society, a senior member is a veteran, perhaps retired professional of vast experience both within the field and within the society itself. Members reach the distinction of Senior Member when their age and years of membership, when added together, equal 100 or more, or they are age 65 (or older), retired, and have 30 years of continuous membership in the society.
