New Teachers Workshop

This highly interactive half-day workshop will provide an introduction to fundamental teaching skills and practical tips for new teachers. Topics include how to actively engage students in class, how to create assessments, and how to plan a syllabus. Short presentations on education research findings that inform evidence-based best practices will accompany working sessions where attendees practice these skills in real time with guidance from workshop leaders.

The workshop is primarily aimed at people who are applying to or about to begin academic positions where they will be the primary course instructor for the first time. Senior graduate students, postdocs, and new faculty hires are all welcome to attend.

The workshop will consist of three sessions, and the following topics and learning objectives are planned:

Session 1: Using Active Engagement in the Classroom

Learning Objectives:

• Understand the importance of and research base supporting active engagement
• Gain familiarity with a few common active engagement teaching techniques
• Practice implementing these techniques in a classroom setting

Session 2: Creating and Using Different Kinds of Assessments

Learning Objectives:

• Understand the difference between reliability and validity in assessment
• Understand the difference between formative and summative assessment
• Practice creating assessment items

Session 3: Planning a Syllabus and Course Schedule

Learning Objectives:

• Gain familiarity with “backward design” (outcomes > assessment > instruction) in course planning
• Understand scaffolded learning and spiral curriculum in a course design context
• Practice developing a course syllabus and schedule
