This workshop will provide basic information on the safe use of powders, as well as handling and storage to maximize quality of the powders and consolidated parts. Using a combination of instructor presentations and open discussion sessions, this workshop will help attendees examine multiple topics including powder science, safety regulations and guidelines, best lab and manufacturing practices, and case studies from industry and research. Materials to be discussed will include metal, ceramic, and polymer powders. Powder processing (e.g., powder production, consolidation) will be covered only in terms of powder requirements and the effect of processing on powder quality. Attendees are encouraged to ask questions and share their experiences with specific applications, best practices, and lessons learned.
This course is designed for those without powder backgrounds who are becoming involved in additive manufacturing and need to develop their knowledge about the additional requirements for handling powders. The majority of the information in this workshop is not available in technical papers and presentations.
