Microstructural and Mechanical Properties of Ternary Li2 Alu

Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Ternary L12 Aluminum-Rich Intermetallics
K.S. Kumar

The phase equilibria pertinent to the Al-rich, ternary L12compounds has been re-examined based on phase diagram data on the TiAl-TiAl3 binary section that takes into consideration the existence of the high-temperature DO23 phase, Ti5Al11. The effect of the size and shape of the L12 phase-field on the observed microstructure at room temperature is discussed and the validity of the assumption that the L12 compound is "derived from the DO22 binary trialuminide" is questioned. Correlations between observed physical properties and the electronic structure in these compounds are suggested, but remain to be verified. The types and morphologies of precipitates encountered in the studies on these ternary compounds are presented and the impact of their presence and thermal instability on properties and fault energies is highlighted. Tensile properties and fracture toughness variation with temperature are discussed and the influence of strain rate, grain size and environment on such properties have been considered.
