Emerging Professionals Symposium

Be sure to attend the symposium Perspectives for Emerging Materials Professionals! Several sessions have been developed to help students and young professionals navigate their career in the materials science profession. Be sure to check back for more details and a listing of all the great talks.

AIST Student Plant Tour
Time: 12:00 - 4:00 p.m.
AIST will offer students the opportunity to tour EVRAZ Oregon Steel. Students registered for MS&T19 before August 19, 2019 will be contacted by e-mail to sign up. Advance registration is required.

EVRAZ Oregon Steel manufactures plate, coil, and large diameter pipe for energy and industrial end markets. They have the only plate mill in the Western U.S. and adjacent Canadian provinces allowing them to hold a leading position in the West Coast plate market.

PCSA Humanitarian Pitch Competition

Put together a winning team to participate in the Humanitarian Pitch Competition! ACerS President’s Council of Student Advisors (PCSA) is hosting a competition for students to pitch their ideas to a panel of judges about how to address a challenge that a community is experiencing. By utilizing their material engineering background, students should aim to show how improved materials/processes will benefit the community that is in need.

Prizes in the amounts of $500, $250, $150, and $100 will be given to the top four teams. Both undergraduate and graduate students are eligible to participate. The winners will be announced at the student awards ceremony at MS&T.

Visit www.ceramics.org/pitchcomp for more information and be sure to submit an abstract of up to 200 words before the September 16, 2019 deadline.

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 1

Ceramic Mug Drop Contest

The Ceramic Mug Drop contest allows students to demonstrate their prowess in designing and manufacturing a ceramic mug possessing high strength, mechanical reliability, and/or aesthetics. Mugs fabricated by students from ceramic raw materials are judged (separately) on aesthetics and then by dropping them from ever-increasing heights. The mug with the highest successful drop height wins!

Please note that students who chose to make fiber-reinforced mugs may use individual commercial fibers in the construction of their mug, but the use of commercially-woven mats is not allowed. Review the contest rules for further details.

The Ceramic Mug Drop Contest is sponsored by Keramos and will be held in the Exhibit Hall on Tuesday, October 1.

To enter a mug, contact Dr. Geoff Brennecka by Monday, September 23, 2019.

Ceramic Disc Golf Contest

This contest always draws a crowd!  Students create discs from ceramic or glass materials to meet certain specifications, and the discs are thrown into a regulation disc golf basket.  Each disc will be judged in the categories of farthest distance achieved and artistic merit (aesthetics). The disc that is successfully thrown into the disc golf basket from the farthest distance in the fewest number of shots will be named winner of the Ceramic Disc Golf Contest, and the most aesthetically pleasing/creative disc will be recorded as “Best Looking” disc.

The Ceramic Disc Golf Contest is sponsored by Keramos and will be held in the Exhibit Hall on Tuesday, October 1.

To enter a disc, contact Dr. Geoff Brennecka by Monday, September 23, 2019.
