TMS Logo Recipient: The 2004 EPD Extraction & Processing Science Award

The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society's Extraction & Processing Division Extraction & Processing Science Award was established in 1955 and recognizes a paper that represents notable contributions to the scientific understanding of the extraction and processing of nonferrous metals.


Paper Title: Recognition for a series of six papers published in Metallurgical& Materials Transactions B in December 2002.

Recipient PhotoEvgueni Jak

Biography: Evgueni Jak is an associate professor at the Pyrometallurgy Research Center of the University of Queensland. He earned a B.S. and M.S. in metallurgy from St. Petersburg Polytechnique University, Russia, and a Ph.D. from The University of Queensland, Australia. He has authored over 50 refereed papers on pyrometallurgy, over 70 phase equilibrium diagrams of slag and oxide systems experimentally investigated with originally developed technique, two multi-component thermodynamic databases for the systems Al-Ca-Fe-K-Na-O-Si and Al-Ca-Fe-O-Pb-Si-Zn developed with computer package FactSage, and the viscosity model for the system Al2O3-CaO- “ FeO”-SiOx.

Recipient PhotoPeter Hayes

Biography: Peter Hayes is a professor at the Pyrometallurgy Research Center of the University of Queensland. He earned a B.S. and M.S. in metallurgy from Newcastle-on-Tyne, United Kingdom, and a Ph.D. from Strathclyde University, United Kingdom. He has been a member of the faculty staff at the University of Queensland for 25 years, supervised 25 postgraduate scholars, authored over 100 papers on pyrometallurgy, and served as foundation director of Pyrometallurgy Research Centre.
