The course will present fundamental chemistry, challenges and updates on treatment and regulatory issues for spent potliner (SPL) management. The most recent treatment technologies will be discussed, and attendees will learn about successful commercial options for sustainable SPL processing, including its safe storage, transportation, and handling. An innovative model for industry/regulator cooperation will be discussed, along with design considerations for improved SPL management. It is intended that representation from all stakeholders will make this course an engaging and valuable experience.

Phil Black has spent the last 25 years involved in the aluminum industry with experience in R&D, smelter development and operations, as well as metal sales and marketing, consulting engineering and business development. He has worked at 16 smelters in 12 countries in cast house, refractories, potrooms, carbon bake, dry scrubbing, anode delivery, pot delining and smelter construction, smelter technical and financial due diligence and environmental projects. He has specialist practical knowledge of and certification in reduction technology and operations. Black’s experience with SPL started in Rio Tinto’s Boyne Island Smelter in 2002. Most recently he worked for an Australian SPL processing company, Regain Services, as Vice President of Aluminum Industry Development. Black now works independently as a consultant in industrial processes, seeking to optimize innovative options for sustainable manufacturing.
