Additive manufacturing (AM) has become popular over the last several years, although seminal developments took place 25–30 years ago. This half-day workshop examines key metal additive manufacturing (AM) processes and their industrial applications. We will begin with an overview of the AM technology landscape, then discuss fusion-based AM processes, covering both wire and powder-based methods, including powder bed fusion (PBF) and directed energy deposition (DED). We will then end with details on emerging solid-state processes, including metal binder jetting, bound powder extrusion, cold spray AM, and more. Process physics, as well as the capabilities and limitations of each process, will be discussed. Attendees will gain an understanding of established and emerging metal AM processes and their transformative implications for industry.
This workshop is designed for people in the materials and manufacturing community already familiar with AM processes and interested in learning more about cutting-edge technologies and related process physics. Academics and researchers will also benefit from discussions about current challenges to the full adoption of AM.
Participants will become familiar with current AM processes and future directions.
Sneha P. Narra, Lead Instructor Assistant Professor, Carnegie Mellon University
About the Presenter Sneha P. Narra received her B.E. in civil engineering (2012) from Osmania University in India. She then moved to the U.S. to pursue graduate education at Carnegie Mellon University, from where she received her M.S. in computational mechanics (2013), M.S. in mechanical engineering (2015), Ph.D. in mechanical engineering (2017), and postdoctoral training at the NextManufacturing Center. She subsequently joined the mechanical engineering department at Worcester Polytechnic Institute as an assistant professor in 2018. She spent three years at WPI’s material and manufacturing engineering program prior to joining the CMU mechanical engineering department in 2021. Her research focuses on advancing metal additive manufacturing knowledge to manufacture light-weight organic designs and utilize novel, advanced materials. At a scientific level, her group studies the fundamentals of additive manufacturing processes, investigates the resulting material microstructure and properties, and develops process design paradigms. She is currently serving as the associate editor of the Additive Manufacturing journal and plays an active role in organizing symposia through the TMS Additive Manufacturing bridge committee and additive manufacturing-related educational activities.
Joy Gockel Associate Professor, Colorado School of Mines
About the Instructor Joy Gockel is an associate professor in mechanical engineering and materials science at Colorado School of Mines and executive director of the Alliance for the Development of Additive Processing Technology (ADAPT), which is the Mines additive manufacturing research center and industry consortium. She joined Mines from Wright State University where she was an assistant professor in mechanical and materials engineering. Prior to her faculty positions, she was a lead engineer at GE Aviation’s Additive Technology Center. She earned her Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University in 2014. Her research specializes in connecting the AM processing-structure-properties-performance relationships. For her research and professional contributions, she has been recognized as a 2020 ASTM International Young Professional in AM, 2021 TMS Young Leader, the 2021 International Outstanding Young Researcher in Freeform and AM (FAME Jr.), and is part of the 2022 class of America Makes Ambassadors. She is currently the Chair of the TMS Additive Manufacturing Committee.
Kirk Rogers The Barnes Global Advisors
About the Instructor Kirk Rogers has used additive technologies to solve manufacturing, repair, and supply chain problems for the last ten years. He recently was the technical leader on the startup of a $40M Additive Manufacturing R&D center, the culmination of a nearly 20-year career at GE and is now Senior ADDvisor℠ at the Barnes Global Advisors. The majority of Rogers’s career has been in the medical device manufacturing realm, where he built manufacturing lines for and qualified numerous products. Rogers has 25 years of experience in materials processing and business strategy, including metal powder production, novel joining methods, metal additive manufacturing, novel refractory alloys, sustainable manufacturing, carbon composite materials, powder metallurgy, technology portfolio management, identification and application of new process methodologies, and development of patent and technology strategy. Rogers has obtained three U.S. patents and has filed more than 20 trade secrets and patent applications. He obtained his B.S. in Materials Engineering from Case Western Reserve University and Ph.D in Materials Science and Engineering from Purdue University. He completed postdoctoral work at The Ohio State University and is a certified Six Sigma Blackbelt.
Scott Thompson Associate Professor, University of Missouri
About the Instructor Scott Thompson is a Steve Hsu Keystone Associate Professor in the Alan Levin Department of Mechanical & Nuclear Engineering in the Carl R. Ice College of Engineering at Kansas State University (KSU). He received both his B.S. and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Missouri (MU) in 2008 and 2012, respectively. Thompson’s research focuses on the thermal modeling of the metals additive manufacturing (AM) process and in characterizing its produced parts for harsh environments. He has published 25 peer-reviewed journal articles directly related to the directed energy deposition and laser powder bed fusion and AM processes. He has helped secure and lead several externally-funded research projects from agencies such as the DoD, DoE, DARPA, NSF, and NASA. He is the Lead Track Chair for Advanced Manufacturing for the upcoming 2023 ASME IMECE conference and a member of ASME, AIAA, and TMS.
