TMS volunteers develop exam content for the Professional Engineer (PE) License in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, administered by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES). They develop exam questions and manage the exam, including pilot testing and post-test evaluations. Volunteers must hold a PE license to participate.

Why Should You Volunteer to Work on the PE Exam?
The benefits to your career include the opportunity to:
- Impact the health, safety, and welfare of the public
- Sharpen your knowledge of materials science and engineering fundamentals
- Network with others devoted to improving engineering education
Volunteers meet two times per year (at the TMS Annual Meeting and at the Materials Science & Technology conference) to participate in item-writing workshops. Participation in item writing activities can also be done remotely through a secure electronic database.
