Halvor Kvande, Lead Organizer/Instructor
Professor Emeritus, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU)

Kvande received his Ph.D. in 1972 from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology and in 1979, defended his thesis for the Norwegian degree of Doctor Technicae from the same university. He started his career with Hydro Aluminum in 1980. His major field of interest has been research and development on the Hall-Héroult process for primary production of aluminum. From 1990 to 2005, he also served as an adjunct professor at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. From 2009 to 2011, he was professor and Qatalum Chair in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Qatar University in Doha, Qatar. In 2012, he retired from his position as chief engineer at Hydro in Oslo, Norway.

Kvande is the author or co-author of more than 150 scientific and technical papers, as well as five books on aluminum electrolysis and related topics. His research work has been appraised in the form of several TMS awards and honors, including his contribution (as a member of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) to the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize.

Stephen Lindsay
Senior Smelting Specialist
Alcoa Inc.

Stephen Lindsay has served in numerous technical and managerial capacities at Alcoa over the past 36 years. He has responsibilities that range from control of fluoride emissions to raw materials including alumina, and customer satisfaction with metal purity that span Alcoa’s smelting operations worldwide. His office is based near Knoxville, Tennessee. His articles on fluoride emission control, alumina, metal purity, and other topics have been published in Light Metals, the proceedings of Australasian Smelting Technology Conferences, and the proceedings of International Alumina Quality Workshops. Lindsay was the editor of Light Metals 2011, and has contributed to the TMS Industrial Aluminum Electrolysis Course, the TMS Anode Technology for Aluminum Industry Course, and various other TMS short courses.

Alton Tabereaux
Technical Consultant, Aluminum Smelting

Tabereaux has worked as a technical consultant with specific expertise in resolving issues and improving productivity at U.S. and international aluminum smelters since 2007. He received a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Alabama in 1971 and worked for 33 years as a manager of research and process technology for both Reynolds Aluminum and Alcoa Primary Metals.

Tabereaux was the recipient of the JOM Best Paper Award in 1994 and 2000 and was editor of Light Metals in 2004. He received the TMS Light Metals Distinguished Service Award in 2007 and the TMS Light Metals Technology Award in 2008. In addition to serving as an instructor for the TMS Industrial Aluminum Electrolysis Courses, he is a lecturer at the annual International Course on Process Metallurgy of Aluminium held in Trondheim, Norway. Tabereaux has published more than70 technical papers and obtained 17 U.S. patents in advances in aluminum electrolysis process and primary aluminum production.

Barry Welch
Emeritus Professor, University of Auckland and Director, Welbank Consulting

Welch has co-authored texts on aluminum smelting and has a lifetime of experience between industrial application, research, and development on topics of importance to improving smelter performance, and academic and industrial teaching and training. He has also co-authored a significant number of papers spanning almost all areas of importance to aluminum smelting technology. A 2015 TMS Fellow, Welch is also the 2014 recipient of the James Douglas Gold Medal from the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers (AIME), among many other awards and honors.
