Professional Membership

Professional membership is designed for individuals who are actively involved with materials science, materials engineering, and/or application. Annual or lifetime memberships are available in the following categories:

Full Member Category

To be a full member of the society, a candidate must hold a baccalaureate degree from a recognized university in metallurgy, metallurgical engineering, materials science, materials engineering, or another science or engineering discipline related to the field or the candidate must have at least five (5) years of experience and be a practicing professional in materials science and engineering or a closely related field.

Associate Member Category

While not possessing the academic or technical experience of a professional member, the associate member is active in fields that are sufficiently related to the advancement of materials science and engineering and its affiliated industries.

Retired Member Category

Retired membership is open to individuals who possess 20 years of continuous TMS membership, are 66 years of age or older, and who are fully retired from their career (including consulting).

Senior Member Category

Reflecting an achieved rank with the society, a senior member is a professional of vast experience both within the field and within TMS. Senior membership is open to individuals whose age and continuous years of TMS membership, when added together equal 100 or more, or retired professionals age 65 (or older) with 30+ years of continuous membership in TMS. If a senior member wishes to receive the complete JOM publication of record in print format (technical articles and JOM: The Magazine content) by mail, they may purchase a subscription for $120 through the online TMS membership renewal form or by contacting a TMS membership representative at or by phone at 1-724-776-9000.
