Each year, deserving students receive much-needed financial support that allows them to complete their studies and move on to advanced degrees or enter the workforce. Students also benefit greatly from the technical exchange and networking opportunities at international gatherings of the minerals, metals, and materials community. The following programs for students are sponsored in part or in full by the TMS Foundation:
Two $5,000 scholarships are available to undergraduate students majoring in metallurgical engineering, materials science and engineering, or to undergraduate students with a significant interest in the materials area. In addition, a travel stipend of $500 per award is available for the recipients to attend the TMS Annual Meeting to formally receive the scholarship.
Awarded to undergraduate students majoring in metallurgical engineering, materials science and engineering, or minerals processing/extraction programs. This scholarship, supported by CALPHAD Inc. and the TMS Foundation, was established to recognize the memory of Dr. Larry Kaufman.
This scholarship is open to undergraduate and graduate students majoring in metallurgical and/or materials science and engineering with an emphasis on all aspects of the high-temperature, high-performance materials used in the gas turbine industry and all other applications.
Both undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to submit essays on global or national issues as well as technical research papers relating to any field of metallurgy or materials science.
Assistance for attending the TMS annual meeting is provided by the five technical divisions for student applicants. Three of the technical divisions also provide financial assistance for student applicants wishing to attend the Materials Science & Technology conference.
Battelle Student Scholarship Programs
Thanks to the generous support of Battelle and its former chief executive officer and president, Jeffrey Wadsworth, the TMS Division Scholarships described below are doubled in value to the student recipients, while also opening doors to educational advancement. Each undergraduate division scholarship is matched, dollar for dollar, through the Battelle Matching Scholarship Program. Additionally, every student who receives a Battelle Matching Scholarship will also receive a Battelle Materials Graduate Student Award when the student matriculates to graduate school to continue studies in a materials–related field.
Awarded to sophomore or junior undergraduate students majoring in the extraction and processing of minerals, metals, and materials.This scholarship is eligible for the Battelle Matching Scholarship Program and the Battelle Materials Graduate Student Award.
Awarded to sophomore or junior undergraduate students studying subjects related to synthesis and processing, structure, properties, and performance of electronic, photonic, magnetic, and superconducting materials as well as materials used in packaging and interconnecting such materials in device structures. This scholarship is eligible for the Battelle Matching Scholarship Program and the Battelle Materials Graduate Student Award.
Awarded to sophomore or junior undergraduate students majoring in metallurgical and/or materials science and engineering with an emphasis on both traditional (aluminum, magnesium, beryllium, titanium, lithium, and other reactive metals) and emerging (composites, laminates, etc.) light metals. This scholarship is eligible for the Battelle Matching Scholarship Program and the Battelle Materials Graduate Student Award.
Awarded to sophomore or junior undergraduate students majoring in metallurgical and/or materials science and engineering with an emphasis on manufacturing from product design to production, integrating process control technology into manufacturing, and basic and applied research into key materials technologies that impact manufacturing processes. This scholarship is eligible for the Battelle Matching Scholarship Program and the Battelle Materials Graduate Student Award.
Awarded to sophomore or junior undergraduate students majoring in metallurgical and/or materials science and engineering with an emphasis on the science and engineering of load-bearing materials, including studies into the nature of a material’s physical properties based upon its microstructure and operating environment. This scholarship is eligible for the Battelle Matching Scholarship Program and the Battelle Materials Graduate Student Award.
