Funded by AIME, this award was established in 1945 and recognizes the best paper published by AIME in a given period where the lead author is a member under 35 years of age. This award honors one of the Institute's founders who served as President and Secretary and was an Honorary Member. In addition to being a consulting mining engineer, Raymond was a practicing lawyer, sailor, soldier, writer, orator, editor, theologian, teacher, novelist, and chess player. He was one of the original members of the AIME, served as its first vice president and as its president from 1872 to 1875. As AIME secretary from 1884 to 1911, he edited 40 volumes of the AIME Transactions.
The Rossiter W. Raymond Memorial Award recipient is also eligible for the Alfred Noble Prize. The Noble Prize, administered by ASCE, is a joint award of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the Western Society of Engineers.
As part of this award, the lead author under 35 years of age will receive a cash prize of $2,500 and a framed certificate bearing name, year, and paper title. If the award-winning paper is dual authored and both authors are under 35, the cash award will be split equally, and a framed certificate will be prepared for each. If the co-author is 35 or older when the paper was submitted, they receive a framed certificate bearing name, year, and paper title.
This award will rotate administration among the 4 AIME Member Societies.
Criteria
- Eligible papers may be single- or dual-authored technical papers where the lead author is a TMS member in good standing and under the age of thirty-five at the time the paper was peer-approved/reviewed and published.
- The paper must be published in either JOM, Journal of Electronic Materials, Metallurgical and Materials Transactions A, or Metallurgical and Materials Transactions B during the months preceding May 1 of the judging years.
