- Quote: It is an honor to win this award given the number of very good papers presented and published in the Electrode Technology sessions at the TMS Annual Meeting. Papers like this always require a significant effort in experimental work, data analysis, and writing and receiving an award like this goes some way to acknowledging that effort. I am very appreciative of the great work TMS does to organize industry conferences like this and to make awards like this possible.

The award is an honor, and for Hydro the award is a recognition of the quality of the work done in cooperation with Sintef and NTNU. It is especially a recognition of the original contribution of Rebecca J. Thorne to the electrochemistry of the carbon anode during a three-year postdoc term at NTNU. My TMS membership is my way of supporting the metal research community and the annual meetings. I get an overview of research and equipment, meet people, collect information, and also have an opportunity to present our own company and work. The formal sessions and the informal talks both are useful for keeping updated and for generating ideas. I am always impressed by is the quality of the voluntary work shown at the meetings.

- Quote: The work presented in this publication has mainly been conducted by Rebecca J. Thorne during her period as a Postdoc Fellow at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). This award is a very important recognition of work done as a collaborative project in the field of carbon anodes for aluminium electrolysers between NTNU, Sintef, and Hydro ASA. The carbon anodes are extremely important for the efficient production of aluminium and are receiving renewed interest these days for several reasons, including changes in the market for raw materials. The research activities aim to improve the understanding of the anode performance in relation to fundamental material properties.

Receiving a Best Paper Award from an institution such as the TMS is one of them, and probably the most valuable one!!! Consequently, I feel highly honored but I would like to share the credit for this Award with all members of the various teams who have worked on the subject for so many years. My thoughts go in particular to Mr. Bernard Samanos, now retired, whose vision and passion for the carbon field forged the path to the use of undercalcined coke that we, players in the electrode industry, are more and more numerous to follow.
