ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA

The University of Virginia is distinctive among institutions of higher education. Founded by Thomas Jefferson in 1819, the University sustains the ideal of developing, through education, leaders who are well-prepared to help shape the future of the nation. The University is public, while nourished by the strong support of its alumni. It is also selective, students who come here have been chosen because they show the exceptional promise Jefferson envisioned. Slightly more than 18,000 students are enrolled in the University's ten degree granting schools: the School of Architecture, the College of Arts and Sciences, the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the McIntire School of Commerce, the Darden Graduate School of Business Administration, the Curry School of Education, the School of Engineering and Applied Science, the School of Law, the School of Medicine, and the School of Nursing. On-Campus Parking: The University of Virginia visitor parking permits will be distributed at registration check-in. No parking permits will be distributed prior to arrival. Guests must purchase permits after they arrive. Permits allow participants to park in the areas adjacent to the residence halls and in the lot south of the Engineering Building. Paid parking is available in metered areas. Please read and follow the instructions printed on the permit. There is a large lot where "oversized vehicles" that require more than one standard parking space are to be parked. Guests should ask for a special permit for oversized vehicles when they check in. Overnight camping is prohibited on University property. Users of handicap parking spaces must display a valid state license plate or "hand tag" from the mirror. Be sure to bring your "hang tag" with you for use in your rented vehicle.
