The Aluminum Cast Shop Science and Technology Course (Cast Shop 15) will cover the science and technology of key cast shop processes for primary and secondary aluminum smelters. Cast shop safety will be highlighted. Customer requirements and cast shop economics will set the scene for defining cast shop objectives. The course will link the science and technology of each process to achieving economic production of high quality products in a safe and environmental manner.

A major part of the course will be on direct chill casting including: different products (rolling slab, extrusion billet, etc.), differing mold technologies, water cooling, macrosegregation, hot and cold cracking and other defects, product shape control, variants such as electromagnetic casting, horizontal direct chill casting, heat flow, mathematical modelling and equipment engineering. The course also covers filtration, degassing, grain refinement, melting and melt loss.

Attendees will leave this course with increased skills to reduce costs, scrap defects, improve casting quality and increase cast house throughput while maintaining safety and environmental performance.

The course will also include a cast shop plant tour hosted by Century Aluminum-Sebree Plant.
