Student Travel Grants

TMS offers funding to help students offset the costs of traveling to select TMS meetings in two forms: through individual travel grants and through student chapter travel reimbursement.

Individual Travel Grants

The TMS technical divisions offer a limited number of travel grants—up to $500 each—to Material Advantage student members interested in attending the TMS Annual Meeting & Exhibition or the Materials Science & Technology (MS&T) conference. These travel grants help students to offset the costs of transportation and hotel accommodations, but students receiving travel grants are responsible for making their own meeting registration and travel arrangements.

For the TMS Annual Meeting & Exhibition, assistance is provided by all five TMS technical divisions:

  • Extraction & Processing Division (EPD)
  • Functional Materials Division (FMD)
  • Light Metals Division (LMD)
  • Materials Processing & Manufacturing Division (MPMD)
  • Structural Materials Division (SMD)

For MS&T, travel assistance is only available from the following divisions:

  • Functional Materials Division (FMD)
  • Materials Processing & Manufacturing Division (MPMD)
  • Structural Materials Division (SMD)

Please note: Travel grants are only available to members of the Material Advantage program.

To apply, complete the Travel Grant Application PDF (form should be typed) and submit with a letter of interest (mentioning the division's technical programming in which you are interested) by by e-mail or by mail to:

Applications will be reviewed by a subcommittee of the appropriate sponsoring division, and this group will select the award recipients.

Student Chapter Travel Reimbursement

TMS offers each Material Advantage chapter an annual travel allowance of up to $500 to attend the TMS Annual Meeting & Exhibition. In order to be eligible for reimbursement, chapters must be in good “active” standing, and each student chapter must provide TMS with verification of student attendance at the meeting. This request must be submitted within two weeks following the meeting.

To apply for reimbursement, complete the Student Chapter Travel Reimbursement request form and return it by e-mail or by mail to:
