Scope: The demand for lithium for the battery market has been increasing and will surpass global production in the medium term. For this reason, lithium is considered a critical raw material and several developments have focused on new sources, including mining and recycling. These technologies include the use of organic acids and ionic liquids for the leaching of lithium sources. However, selective separation is a challenge due to the presence of transition metals and other contaminants in high concentration, which result in the development of separation/purification techniques. This special topic seeks high-quality submissions focusing on the latest novel advances. Suggested topics include, but are not limited to lithium extraction from unusual sources; thermal treatment in lithium processing from primary and secondary sources; evaluation of leaching agents – as organic acids, ionic liquids, and deep eutectic solvents; and challenges in lithium separation – solvent extraction, ion exchange resins, precipitation, and membranes.
