TMS’s origins as a professional society date back to 1871 with the founding of its parent society, The American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers (AIME). It was not until 1984 that TMS became separately incorporated so that it could better serve the needs of the growing minerals, metals, and materials community.
Over the years, TMS has grown and expanded its initiatives to further promote the community. You can view many iconic moments in TMS’s history through the interactive timeline below, or you can return to the Our History page to access even more resources.
