- Quote: It is a special honor for our research team and for me personally to receive this award, especially since we can call ourselves newcomers in this research field at best. Our core competence is in the area of fluiddynamics of liquid metals. Our focus is on laboratory-scale modeling of diverse liquid metal processes and technologies. For this purpose, we have developed innovative measurement methods that allow us to obtain information from the experiments that is extremely important for the understanding and optimization of these processes and provide valuable data for the validation of numerical models. So it is a special pleasure for us that this award recognizes this competence and the possibilities it offers as being of great value for Extraction and Metallurgical Processing in the future.

- Quote: Winning this award with colleagues is a great thrill. This paper resulted from a PhD project carried out by Nazmul, in which, he developed a CFD model that incorporated the kinetics of the reactions inside the Top Submerged Lance reactor. The project was very ambitious, but Nazmul did an excellent job coming to grips with the challenges of linking chemistry with fluid flow. The results show that mathematical models can be very useful in describing the details of how pyrometallurgical reactors work. The collaboration between Swinbourne University of Technology and Outotec was excellent throughout the project, but it is Nazmul and his main supervisor Jamal who deserve most of the credit. I thank TMS for this recognition and encouragement.

- Quote: “It gives me immense pleasure to receive the 2009 Extraction and Processing Division Science Award along with my co-authors Dr. Ramana G. Reddy and Mr. Pratheesh George. As TMS is the leading organization promoting science and engineering in the field of minerals, metals, and materials across the globe, I am truly honored by this global award. Experimental thermodynamics plays an integral role in the science of extraction and process metallurgy and research in this direction is truly shrinking. TMS has distinctly recognized our effort which will enhance my long-term vision of strengthening research in this important field.”

It is very welcome as the recognition to one of those who would otherwise compound the large number of tireless, but unnamed, science-builders, usually secluded from the great public by the very nature of their activity. Therefore, I would like to accept this award as a celebration of the common ground shared by all the scientists who may only escape the oblivious condition of anonymity when looked upon as the collective society of TMS.”

It helps us forget any of the occasional hardships related to the physical and psychological stress of exacting research tasks. Good results are instant rewards, keeping the steam of researchers up, but long-term motivation and ambitions are greatly fostered by respected awards of this kind. The professional award also acts as a visa for accessing more professional cooperation and relations. It helps in daily situations at the wider workplace, where the quality of work and significance of the research field need to be demonstrated to officials or other personalities.”

It is particularly rewarding to receive this award together with my former student and coauthor, in that it is the students who actually perform the experiments and make the calculations. We shared many difficult moments as well as the pleasure of obtaining new and sometimes unexpected results; thus, it is very meaningful to share this award with such a former student."

I was originally attracted to the idea of a research career due to my interest in extractive metallurgy, and so it is particularly gratifying to receive this award. Although the framework of the shrinking core model has, for many years, served us well in the analysis of hydrometallurgical leaching data, there is still potential to broaden its scope and more directly integrate it into the mechanisms of individual leaching systems. I hope that your recognition of my paper will generate more interest in such efforts."
