During these observations, I will get to meet new people from other committees and divisions that are not as closely aligned with my research. As I move forward in my career, I plan to serve the community in leadership positions within TMS and this award will help me develop necessary skills and perspectives.
- Other: I would like to thank the Extraction & Processing Division (EPD) for my selection as a 2012 Young Leader. The TMS 2012 Annual Meeting & Exhibition in Orlando this year was a rewarding experience that heightened my awareness of the various facets of an Annual Meeting. By judging at the Materials Science Bowl and EPD poster session, I was able to see how TMS can provide a rich and varied experience for undergraduate and graduate students alike. In addition, the invitations to the EPD Council and TMS Board of Directors meetings allowed me to observe the organizational structure from the committee meetings all the way to the “top” in a single Annual Meeting. Having attended the TMS 2002 Annual Meeting & Exhibition, I can assure prospective Young Leaders and members alike that these are myths. Despite being based in South Africa, I was selected as Young Leader Intern for the Extraction & Processing Division (EPD). In addition to the benefits of the position (i.e., monetary assistance for travel and lodging, etc.), being selected has in itself been a huge privilege, proving that TMS truly is a global player in the metallurgical industry. The symposia at the Annual Meeting covered such a variety of subjects that I had difficulty deciding where to focus my attention. I therefore spent most of my time at the "Sulphide Smelting '02" sessions, but also attended some presentations from General Pyrometallurgy and Waste Treatment. During breaks in the program, I had interesting discussions and made valuable new contacts with numerous people from all over the world. Besides attending the symposia, we as Young Leaders were invited to attend and participate in a number of high-level discussions that provided insight into the workings of the organization. These started with a Young Professionals Committee meeting, which served as an introduction to the program, with previous Young Leaders and TMS staff providing guidance. I also attended the Waste Treatment Committee meeting, Pyrometallurgy Committee meeting, Young Leaders Tutorial Luncheon Lecture, EPD Council, and EPD Luncheon Lecture, each of which added to the value of my experience. For me personally, the Seattle experience has been enriching for both my chosen career and for my personal development and I am looking forward to the next event with anticipation. Thank you to TMS, and particularly the EPD.

- Other: As a Young Leader Intern, I had the opportunity to attend several functions that I would not normally have attended (like the TMS awards banquet and the Young Leaders Tutorial Luncheon). The Young Leaders program gave me the opportunity to meet other TMS members, and other Young Leaders, which enriched my experiences at the TMS 2001 Annual Meeting & Exhibition. The award also provided me with much appreciated financial assistance for attending the conference, which helped justify attending the conference to my employer. I thank TMS for this award and am very appreciative of the efforts that TMS has made to reach out to younger members.

- Other: As a recipient of the Extraction & Processing Division (EPD) Young Leader Scholarship, I was able to attend theTMS 2001 Annual Meeting & Exhibition in New Orleans that I otherwise would have had to miss. Thus, I want to thank the TMS and the EPD for this wonderful opportunity. At the meeting, I attended several committee meetings: Young Professionals Committee, Pyrometallurgy Committee, and EPD Council. They gave me insight how the organization works and how to get more involved. I also attended the organizing committee meeting for the EPD fall meeting. I got to know the topics and the organizers of the meeting that I hope to attend later in the year. For this year's meeting, I had prepared a poster instead of presenting a paper. I also attended numerous technical sessions, the exhibition, and some social events. Altogether, the Annual Meeting provided me a good opportunity to meet old friends and create new contacts. Thanks again!
