This is a recognition of the quality of Constellium Technology Center scientific long standing collaboration with Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Jean-Marie Drezet, and the Computational Materials Laboratory. This study allowed us to determine the level of internal stress reduction when using a wiper in semi-continuous direct chill casting of high-strength aluminum rolling ingots and to validate our casting models as well as our surface residual stress measurement method. This recognition will help us to keep promoting innovative modelling and ambitious research approaches for efficient aluminum alloy processing.

- Quote: The 2014 TMS Light Metals and Warren Peterson Cast Shop for Aluminum Production awards are a clear recognition of the quality of scientific investigations through a collaboration with our industrial partner, Constellium, Voreppe, France. We started to use neutron diffraction in 2010 at the Institute Laue Langevin (ILL) in Grenoble, France, and we realized that aluminum was rather transparent to neutrons thus allowing for the measurement of internal stresses in rather large components such as billets and rolling sheet ingots. In our paper, we reported the level of stress reduction obtained when a wiper is used during DC casting of high strength Al alloys. At the same time, these measurements allowed us to further validate our casting models.
