- Quote: It has been an honor to work with so many other colleagues that have given their time and energy to make our Society better. I have found that the relationships I have with fellow scientists have become more productive through the opportunities our Society offers in programming, through active participation to technical committees. As well as in volunteering in the many administrative committees within the Society. These relationships have been important in my career development and I see my volunteerism as a positive in my career development.

- Title: Consulting Engineer, Repair
- Affiliation: GE Aviation, West Chester OH United States
- Quote: I am so grateful for this award because it was made possible by collaboration and teamwork with many TMS colleagues, rather than any individual contribution by me. I have been very fortunate to work with peers who are highly competent materials professionals from industry, academia, and government agencies. I find these collaborations highly satisfying and effective. I encourage all members of TMS, throughout their career, to take advantage of these peer networks and work together to both advance their own learning and career experiences as well as strengthening the entire materials engineering community in the process. My thanks to TMS, my colleagues, and the SMD Committee for the nomination and award.
- Citation: For providing distinguished service to the structural superalloys community over the past thirty years through his leadership of TMS conferences and symposia.

- Quote: I was much honored to be nominated for the SMD Distinguished Service Award and thrilled to have been chosen. TMS has been very nurturing to me in establishing my academic career and SMD has always been my home. Because of the great benefits I received from active involvement, I encourage others to take an active role. Sometimes that little push in the door makes all the difference in a person's future. I have met many great mentors and scholars, both globally within TMS and locally within SMD. Within TMS, the SMD committee has a special history for me as my Ph.D. advisor, Amiya Mukherjee, had been involved in its early formation. I know he is very proud that so many of his former students take an active role in maintaining what is probably the most active committee within TMS.
- Citation: For exceptional service and dedication to SMD objectives, programing, and enthusiastic mentoring of young professionals.

- Quote: I have been a member of TMS continuously for over 20 years. I initially joined as a joint TMS/ASM member during my first year of college. At that time I recognized TMS primarily as the organization behind the large annual conferences and the monthly JOM magazine. The combination of broad ranging conference session topics and the technical articles opened my eyes to the many facets of the materials science field as I was trying to learn where my interests would take me. As I advanced further in my education and then onto engineering roles, TMS allowed me to stay connected to the quickly evolving field of materials well beyond what my engineering job focus would allow at the time. As a conference participant and, over the last 12 years, as an active TMS committee member, TMS involvement has helped form connections for me across the technical field amongst academic, research, and industrial aspects. Ultimately, however, it is about the people. I have found that service in TMS has always rewarded me with an abundance of new opportunities to meet and connect with people and develop new professional ties. And so it is with sincere appreciation that I thank TMS and the volunteers who make the organization so successful for honoring me with the 2014 SMD Distinguished Service Award.

- Quote: I am honored to be recognized by my peers and colleagues within TMS. I appreciate the time and effort all the volunteers put into TMS, and to be noted for distinguished service by this group of dedicated individuals is very humbling. TMS has provided a voice for the materials field, a place to share ideas with colleagues at meetings, and support for the next generation of engineers and scientists through extensive student programs, and I am glad to have been able to participate in programming and editorial activities highlighting the mechanical behavior of materials. Thank you.

- Quote: Service to one's profession is undertaken foremost because it is a requirement of professional responsibility. Rewards of service include the satisfaction and camaraderie of working together with the most capable of colleagues to advance the greater food by promoting the excellent practice of our profession, both in the present and in the far-reaching future. I am grateful to TMS for the means it has provided me to serve my profession and to reap the rewards of service. Recognition of that service, as embodied in this reward, is deeply humbling. But because this recognition is also a reflection of the outstanding colleagues with whom I have worked in TMS and the accomplishments we together share, it is deeply fulfilling.

- Quote: “I am most honored with this recognition, which is being generously bestowed upon me. TMS means a great deal to me, both personally and professionally. I remember the first meeting I attended in ’73 or ’74. My mentor, Professor C.S. Barrett, took me to the social event, and I was astounded to meet, in person, famous researchers that I had known only through books and publications. This was a revelation to me. I hope to one day fill this role for the younger generations and thus be a link in our chain of knowledge.”
