The Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science (MEMS) at the University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) invites applications for a tenure track assistant professor position in the area of Functional Materials. Successful applicants should have the ability to build an externally funded research program, as well as contribute to the teaching mission of the MEMS Department. Applicants should have a PhD or ScD in Materials Science & Engineering or a related field. Applicants with outstanding track records at the associate professor and full professor levels are also encouraged to apply, but the focus will be at the assistant professor level.

We are seeking applicants who have strong interdisciplinary interests and who can collaborate across engineering disciplines. The primary hiring focus will be on candidates with demonstrated experimental research experience and a sound fundamental understanding of electronic, optical and/or magnetic properties of materials. Examples include, but are not limited to: oxide/hybrid semiconductors for artificial-intelligence devices; optically/magnetically active materials for brain and other in-situ imaging; emerging light absorbers for affordable photovoltaics; piezotronics and other sensing materials for extreme environments; and novel materials for conversion and/or storage of energy.

The MEMS Department currently has 30 tenured or tenure-track faculty members who generate over $7 million in annual research expenditures. The Department maintains cutting-edge experimental and computational facilities in its five core research competencies: advanced manufacturing and design; materials for extreme conditions, biomechanics and medical technologies; modeling and simulation; energy system technologies; and quantitative and in-situ materials characterization.

The successful candidate for this position will benefit from the resources, support, and a multidisciplinary research environment fostered by many interdisciplinary centers, including the University of Pittsburgh’s Center for Research Computing (http://www.crc.pitt.edu) and the Petersen Institute of NanoScience and Engineering (http://www.nano.pitt.edu), located within the Swanson School of Engineering. The latter is a user facility that houses state-of-the-art materials characterization and fabrication capabilities.

The Department of Physics, in collaboration with the Department of Chemistry and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), invite applications to fill an Endowed Distinguished Chair in the Natural Sciences, a tenured faculty position at the full professor level. The Chair will hold a joint appointment in the Department of Physics and the Department of Chemistry. The materials and condensed matter research faculty affiliated with the Departments of Physics and Chemistry at UIC conduct experimental and theoretical research on a wide range of functional, complex materials, including energy-relevant, topological, and strongly-correlated systems. The Department of Materials Science and Engineering at UC Davis invites applications for a tenure-track position in the area of materials thermodynamics. The successful candidate is a broad-based materials scientist who uses experimental thermodynamics to study modern fundamental questions in solids as well as the interfaces between solids and liquids or gases. This individual will integrate multiple approaches, including calorimetry, theoretical methods, and computational methods. He or she will address problems of fundamental materials stability, reactivity, and properties at the atomic, molecular and nanoscale. She or he will be expected to build a research program on fundamental materials thermodynamic science based on an understanding of topics and materials of current engineering interest. Relativity seeks a highly talented Additive Manufacturing Technician to join a rapidly growing space startup. Our mission is to change the way rockets are built and flown—you will be assisting in increasing the organization and print capabilities of our printers. On a day to day, you will be working closely with our Additive Team to plan and execute builds. You will be reporting directly to the CTO, Jordan Noone.
 
The Mission/Outcomes and Objectives:
Your main objective is to take ownership of the DMLS maintenance and build operation, while maintaining supplies required to execute builds.  A major component of this role will also be to streamline process planning, finalizing SOPs and work order tracking for DMLS operations. Additionally, you will be providing support for metallography, materials characterization, and DED 3D printing operations. Awareness of quality, safety, processes, and procedures are essential.
  
Candidate Profile:
The ideal candidate will have experience operating a DMLS machine or other metal powder based printing machine. This means that you may have had exposure to 3D printing software, and mechanical testing of samples. Collaboration is also crucial in this role—excellent verbal and written communication skills are required. Enthusiasm, willingness to learn new technologies are a plus.

Minimum Required Skills and Competencies
- Experience operating a DMLS machine or other metal based powder based printing machine 
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Applications
- Basic knowledge of metal manufacturing processes
- Hardware maintenance and upkeep
- Experience with mechanical testing—from sample preparation, set up, and data collection

Preferred Skills and Competencies
- Experience with 3D printing software
- 3+ years of experience operating metal DMLS or DED 3D printers

The department offers BS, MS, MEng, and PhD degrees in Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) in the College of Engineering. The department educates students in the fundamental science and engineering principles relevant to materials, emphasizing the relationships between processing, nano/microstructure, characterization, properties, processing and design of advanced materials. The program trains students in the experimental and computational skills for a professional career, graduate study and advanced research in MSE.
