Verification & Validation of Computational Models Associated with the Mechanics of Materials

As the utilization of predictive computational modeling for reducing time and cost of new mechanical structures, materials systems, and manufacturing technologies continues to grow, the widespread need for verification and validation (V&V) of these models cannot be overestimated. Verification & Validation of Computational Models Associated with the Mechanics of Materials, a new study project organized by TMS on behalf of the National Science Foundation, aims to help chart a course for widespread adoption of robust V&V among computational modelers and experimentalists in mechanics and materials science and engineering, while also taking advantage of the foundation that has already been laid in V&V in a variety of communities. The outputs of an invited participant workshop, bringing together internationally recognized researchers and thought leaders on the topic, serve as the basis for the final report. The focus of these efforts is to identify key pathways and opportunity areas, and to develop specific, detailed recommendations that can advance strong progress in implementing widespread experimental validation and mathematical verification of computational models related to the mechanics of materials.
