This enables me and my students to learn about the most recent research advances that crosscut materials science, then subsequently extend and apply these advances to our nuclear/irradiated materials niche. TMS meetings have also helped me build stronger relationships with colleagues, meet potential collaborators, and cultivate friendships. While my university had other career resources, there was nothing to compare to being able to ask questions directly to a group of early-career scientists working in my desired field. Last year, I was able to start paying the favor back when I was a panelist on the same career panel that had been so helpful to me a few years earlier. Judging the Materials Bowl, attending the Women in Science Breakfast, and selecting the SMD student poster award winners provided a learning experience in the society’s many activities to excite, engage, and retain a highly talented and diverse membership. The opportunities to attend the President’s Reception, interact with the Board of Directors, and attend the Young Leaders Luncheon throughout the week highlighted many opportunities to engage in leadership roles within TMS. I am looking forward to a long future with TMS, contributing in these leadership roles, and taking advantage of opportunities to provide service to the society.

- Other: The opportunity to be a Young Leader at the TMS 2007 Annual Meeting & Exhibition was an eye-opening experience for me. Although I’ve been involved in TMS for nine years as a student and professional member, I’ve never felt like I’ve had the ability or knowledge to get involved in the Annual Meetings beyond presenting papers. This award gave me the opportunity to see the inner workings of the society committee meetings, an experience which will motivate me to get more involved in the future. As a result of this experience, I would encourage all young members to not be intimidated and to use the TMS Annual Meetings as a way to get more involved in the various specialty committees within the society. It is really as simple as showing up to a committee meeting to see how things work and have your voice heard.

- Other: I am honored to be selected by the Structural Materials Division (SMD) as a Young Leader Intern for 2006. The Internship fosters a platform in which to become involved in many aspects of the society that includes, but is not limited to, student outreach, technical programming, and technical publication. I was impressed with TMS' approach to developing a materials community as a whole (which I only had a peripheral understanding of before), and in general, their eagerness to encourage young professional involvement. Through the Internship I met with established professionals, as well as young professionals and students, which allowed me to develop a number of new and exciting collaborations. It is clear that the program can open many doors! I look forward to my continued and developing interactions with the TMS.

- Other: I am honored to be selected by the Structural Materials Division (SMD) as one of the 2006 Young Leader Interns. Coming from a condensed-matter physics background, my attending the TMS 2003 Annual Meeting & Exhibition was partly responsible for shifting my interest to materials science and engineering. It was a special opportunity to see behind the scenes workings of the society and the planning for future meetings within the technical committees. The SMD Council meeting was an informative showcase of the big-picture thinking and planning of the Division. It was also reassuring to see a conscious eye on future developments while keeping the division efforts suitably oriented. I was able to attend the Mechanical Behavior of Materials, Chemistry and Physics of Materials, and High Temperature Alloys Committee meetingss; they represented a range of interests from basic science to industrial applications and were all very active. I felt very welcome in all three and plan to serve with both the Chemistry and Physics of Materials and High Temperature Alloys Committees. For this meeting, I had organized the Point Defects in Materials symposium, and attended those talks for the majority of the meeting. Fortunately, most of the meetings I attended as a Young Leader Intern did not conflict with the technical programming, which was a definite plus for me. In addition to the talks, it was a great pleasure to see the level of research accomplishments and presentation from graduate and undergraduate students in the poster competition, and an honor to judge the competition. It was also a great chance to talk more with members of the SMD Council and the Young Leaders Committee. The Young Leader Luncheon featured an informative talk by Nik Chawla about navigating the path of an assistant professor and provided further opportunities to talk with other young leaders. The variety of social functions—from the Young Leaders Reception on Sunday to the TMS-AIME Awards Banquet—provided a welcome respite from the hectic schedule of the meeting along with invaluable time meeting those in the TMS administration in a social setting. The advantage of the Intern Program is that it provides a variety of different experiences to give both a broad and deep experience of TMS and the various roles the society plays.

- Other: I would like to express my gratitude to the Structural Materials Division (SMD) for selecting me as one of their 2005 Young Leader Interns. Attending the TMS 2005 Annual Meeting & Exhibition as a Young Leader highlighted the many benefits of a TMS membership and helped me understand the inner-workings of the society. I’ve come to realize that the organization goes well beyond its tremendous networking opportunities and wide breadth of shared information in the various technical sessions. I enjoyed seeing how individuals from academia, government labs, and industry work together to improve the materials community as a whole.

- Other: It is a great pleasure and honor to be a TMS Young Leader Intern in 2005. I would like to express my gratitude to the Structural Materials Division (SMD) for selecting me. During the TMS 2005 Annual Meeting & Exhibition, the Young Leaders program afforded me to attend eight committee meetings, four social function events, one luncheon lecture, numerous technical sessions, and the exhibition, including SMD Council Meeting, Board of Directors Meeting, TMS Networking Mixer, and TMS-AIME Annual Awards Banquet. These experiences provided great opportunities for me to have insights how this prestigious society runs and how to get more involved. The knowledge I learned with respect to society management, membership development, and committee organization were very instructive. These opportunities also helped me to meet old and new friends, and develop a network with established professionals as well as students and young professionals from all over the world. From these activities, I can truly feel that TMS strongly encourages and promotes young professionals to participate in the technical committee business and management. I believe that the objectives of the Young Leader program are well met for my participation. I deeply appreciate TMS and SMD for giving me this valuable opportunity. I look forward to continuing my participation and make contribution to TMS in the future.

- Other: I would like to thank the Structural Materials Division (SMD) for choosing me to be one of its 2004 Young Leader Interns. In the past I have directly benefited from the presentation, educational, and networking opportunities provided by a TMS meeting. This year, in addition to attending symposia such as Magnesium Technology 2004 and the Symposium on Microstructural Stability in Honor of Roger Doherty, the Young Leaders Internship afforded me the opportunity to attend a wide range of functions and meetings, such as the SMD Council meeting and the Board of Directors meeting, which gave me a better understanding of how TMS is able to continue to provide these opportunities for its members. The details of symposia organization, publishing, membership, and committee organization were instructive for me as far as understanding how TMS continues to support fundamental materials science as well as remain current with developing technologies that fall under its umbrella. I am looking forward to becoming more involved in TMS in the future and I feel truly honored to have been selected as a Young Leader Intern for 2004.

- Other: Participation in TMS conferences has been an integral element to my educational and professional growth over the last ten years. I deeply thank the Structural Materials Division (SMD) for choosing me as one of its 2003 Young Leader Interns. TMS meetings provide a wealth of information through their outstanding technical programs and terrific networking opportunities with the present and future leaders of the materials field. At the Annual Meeting, I was also able to participate in a wide range of Society functions, some of which I have attended in years past and others that I have never been a part of. The SMD Council meeting provided a better understanding of some of the issues facing the Society as a whole and the dedication and commitment of those who serve at the top levels of the organization. In addition to these activities, I attended the Federal Funding Workshop and the Honorary Dinner for Professor Mike Meshii, who was my thesis adviser in graduate school. I am certainly looking forward to many more years of involvement and service to TMS!

- Other: It is my great pleasure to be selected as a TMS Young Leader Intern for the Electronic, Magnetic & Photonic Materials Division (EMPMD; now Functional Materials Division). I attended the EMPMD Council meeting and was surprised to see how open the division is. Every member has a common goal: to serve the Society well and make it better in the future. Encouraged by Jay Narayan, Robert Shull, and Sungho Jin, I joined the Nanomaterials Committee and contacted two other committees. I also attended the TMS Fellow Advisory meeting and feel their discussion on the strategic plan for TMS improvement is very encouraging. I thank TMS for giving me this opportunity to see the Society from the inside and make many good friends. I expect to serve this Society for the rest of my materials scientist career.

- Quote: The TMS Annual Meeting was a great experience for me as a Young Leader (YL) Intern. All the committees were welcoming to new people and seemed to value our input. I felt I could contribute to TMS, and the YL program is an effective mechanism to get younger people involved (who might otherwise might feel too intimidated). I look forward to working with the highly motivated people in the YL group. I attended some good talks, and made valuable contacts. I'd like to thank the people involved with the program for allowing me to attend the meeting, which otherwise would have not been possible for me!

- Quote: I would like to express my sincere thanks to the Young Professionals Committee and the Structural Materials Division (SMD) for the opportunity to attend the TMS 2000 Annual Meeting & Exhibition and to explore the numerous functions of TMS. All of the committees were extremely receptive and often asked for my input on key issues. The social events such as the Young Leaders Reception and the awards dinner provided excellent opportunities to network with peers and well-established TMS professionals. Through the Chemistry & Physics of Materials Committee I now understand and appreciate the tremendous team effort that goes into organizing symposia. The Student Affairs Committee demonstrated TMS's strong commitment to student outreach through scholarship presentations and the discussion/organization of student paper contests and poster sessions. The Young Professionals Committee was pulsating with energy, and showed what powerful ideas can come when a group of young, imaginative minds comes together. The SMD Council meeting was a great experience for me because it demonstrated how all of the hard work from the various subcommittees comes together in one forum. It showed me that the strength of the SMD is achieved by the sum of its parts, which are led by a team of truly dedicated members. In summary, the Young Leader Intern program is an excellent means of getting young professionals involved in TMS activities. I am honored to have been chosen as a 2000 Young Leader Intern and am very much looking forward to the fall meeting.
