Scope: Significant advancements in optoelectronics and photonics encompass new materials including 2D materials, active and passive devices, circuits & systems and methods of integration. From a materials perspective, there has been a better understanding of the processes, role of defects and dislocations, stresses and scaling. The mature, reliable, scalable and cost-effective approach to silicon technology is slowly and steadily making its way to silicon photonics. The significant advancements in silicon and non-silicon based optical filters, transceivers, modulators, waveguides, photodetectors, sensors, solar cells, LIDARs, spectrometers and other related devices are just a few examples of the growth in photonics and optoelectronics. This special topic is anticipated to bring together results from research that is being performed in academia, industry and national labs.
