The TMS Metallurgical and Materials Engineering PE Licensing Exam Review Course will address a variety of approaches and methodologies, including design, analysis, application, and operations. This course will include refresher training on the following topical areas:

   o The Fe-C Diagram as a model phase diagram
   o Crystal structures in steel
   o Diffusion (including Fick’s first law, gradients, coefficients, atom type, and effect of T)
   o Phase transformations- diffusion- and sheer-controlled

   o Hardness, strength, alloying & heat treatment
   o Heat treatments for ductility, hardening
   o Surface hardening
   o Low toughness and embrittlement

• Mechanical/States of Stress
   o Two-dimensional & three-dimensional states of stress
   o Poisson’s Ratio & relationship between elastic constraints
   o Stress-strain relations & plane strain

• Processing
   o Basic process (raw materials, mold making, melting)
   o Process characteristics (disposable and permanent molds)
   o Product characteristics (shrinkage, distortion, porosity, allowances)
   o Cold work (recovery, recrystallization, grain growth, property changes, in process control)

• Chemical analysis techniques, metallography

• Performance
   o Arrhenius behavior and predicting transformation times
   o Creep and high temperature flow
   o Ductile to brittle transition
   o Using standards and specifications

• Mechanical Behavior of Composites & Heterogeneous Material and High-Temperature Degradation
   o Various composite forms of materials
   o Elastic modules in fiber-reinforced composites
   o Composite strengthening
   o High-temperature oxidation, corrosion mechanisms (including metal dusting)
   o Creep-fracture and stress rupture
   o Radiation-induced degradation

About the Exam

The Metallurgical and Materials Engineering version of the Principals and Practice of Engineering (PE) Licensing Exam is the second part of the licensing examination’s requirement toward becoming a registered professional engineer. The first part is the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) written examination. The PE Licensing Exam is administered by state licensure boards, which are provided the test instrument by the National Council on Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES). The NCEES is responsible for scoring the examinations. The exam itself is developed by volunteer members of the TMS Professional Registration Committee, who are all licensed professional engineers (PEs).
