TMS 2009 Annual Meeting a Success: Conference Attracts Record Numbers

Amid the current economy, attendees and presenters considered issues not only of economic and job security but also of energy, environment, and industry during the TMS 2009 Annual Meeting. A total of 3,681 materials scientists, engineers, students, and educators gathered in San Francisco, California, for TMS 2009, the Society’s 138th technical conference.

During the week of February 14–19, more than 2,600 papers—a TMS record— were presented at 64 symposia. The conference was also the site of a total of seven workshops, tutorials, and short courses; student and professional networking events; student competitions; and an exhibition of 130 companies.

Nearly 450 attendees gathered during the Aluminum Plenary Session to hear about the future of the aluminum industry and how high-profile companies such as Rio Tinto Alcan and Alcoa plan to adjust to the economic downturn.

 In addition, 12 Material Advantage teams from colleges and universities across the United States battled for a chance to be named the 2009 Alcoa Materials Bowl Tournament champion. In the end, Colorado School of Mines came out on top, beating second place team Boise State.
