Summit Program Details 

Session 1: A Decade of DMMM Impact

Date: Tuesday, March 25
Time: 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Location: MGM Grand Las Vegas Hotel & Casino, Room 150

Attendees will review the topics, lessons learned, and progress from the first four DMMM summits with speakers representing the previous summits. In addition to reviewing key ideas and impacts from past summits, the session will explore intersectionality thereby engaging prior attendees and introducing new attendees to foundational themes in this space. The schedule for this session includes: 

  • 2:30 p.m. Presentation: "A Decade of DMMM Impact," Ashley Paz y Puente, University of Cincinnati  
  • 2:50 p.m. Keynote: "Which Faculty Diversity Programs Work? Evidence From 600 Colleges and Universities," Frank Dobbin, Harvard University
  • 3:50 p.m. Interactive Activity: Cultivating Belonging: We will lead an activity in small groups aimed at helping everyone relate to the feeling of being an outsider, and how that impacts our experiences in the world and at work. We will also explore how the experience shifts if you feel a sense of belonging, and how to create spaces that cultivate belonging and inclusion.
  • 4:30 p.m. Interactive Activity: Strength through Diversity: This activity will be led through small groups and aimed at relating our collective approach to diversity and its impact. We will explore what symbols resonate with our individual experiences and outlooks, and leverage that to have dialogue about coming together to find strength through diversity in STEM.
  • 4:50 p.m. Panel Discussion: Shaping the Future of STEM: Insights from Previous DMMM Leaders: Panelists include Liz Holm, University of Michigan (DMMM1); Keith Bowman, University of Maryland, Baltimore County (DMMM2); Michael Rawlings, TMS (DMMM3); Aeriel Leonard, The Ohio State University (DMMM4)

Session 2: Physical & Cognitive Diversity

Date: Wednesday Morning, March 26
Time: 8:40 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Continuing on from the introduction of this topic at DMMM4, this session will explore diversity in physical, cognitive, and/or sensory experience. Attendees will discuss how to create and maintain a culture of inclusion and belonging for those with physical and cognitive diversity and embrace these unique gifts. The schedule for this session includes:

  • 9:20 a.m. Introductory Comments: Introduction to Celebrating and Accommodating Physical and Cognitive Disabilities in Materials Science, Ben Britton, University of British Columbia
  • 9:30 a.m. Panel Discussion: Perspectives on Physical and Cognitive Disability Needs in the Workplace. Panelists include: Jennifer Carter, Case Western Reserve University, and Gee Abraham, Gee Abraham Edits.

Session 3: Taking Actions to Continue Progress

Date: Wednesday, March 26
Time: 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

During the closing Plenary of the first DMMM, Mildred Dresselhaus shared that, “Although progress has been made during my career in increasing diversity throughout the various fields of science and technology, equal entry has not yet been achieved. Many reasons will be given why it is in the public interest to achieve this goal…” To further this vision, this session will explore the present day context, drivers, and agents of change that are required to assist individuals, TMS, and society as a whole to support continuing progress in inclusion and diversity. The schedule for this session includes: 

  • 2:00 p.m. Panel Discussion: Inclusive Professional Environments. This is a two-part, panel-based discussion. Panelists will include: Keith Bowman, University of Maryland, Baltimore County College of Engineering and Information Technology; Olivia Graeve, University of California San Diego; Elizabeth Opila, University of Virginia; Izabela Szlufarska, University of Wisconsin Madison; and Ricardo Castro, Lehigh University
  • 4:00 p.m. Presentation: "Breaking Barriers and Materials: Uncovering Constance Tipper's Impact on Metallurgy and Inclusion," Mengying Liu, Washington and Lee University
  • 4:20 p.m. Panel Discussion: Materials Engineering at Apple: Moderated by Jim Yurko with panelists from the Apple Materials Team: Lara Madril, Dana Frankel, and Art Counts

Session 4: Personal & Professional Development

Date: Thursday, March 27
Time: 8:30 a.m. to Noon
Location: MGM Grand Las Vegas Hotel & Casino, Room 150

The final session of DMMM5 will focus on personal and professional development of attendees and on facilitating their growth in the systems and environments in which they work.

Part 1 of the session will be a panel discussion on Career Advancement and Transitions. In this discussion, discover how identity and cultural influences impact career choices and decision making. In this panel session, we will discuss how the dynamics of diversity contribute to personal and career growth and leadership roles. Our speakers will first take turns to share their experiences in career changes between academia, industry, and government research as well as their career advancement strategies. They will share their perspectives on how diversity evolves in leadership roles and how to effectively manage a diverse team. This session will conclude with a panel of speakers for an engaging Q&A with the audience.

Part 2 of the session will present strategies you can put into practice at your home institutions to create a positive and inclusive culture, starting from hiring new employees to retaining effective leaders.  This segment of the session includes an opening presentation followed by a hands-on activity where participants will gain practice in challenging their own biases and identifying the best candidates in a mock resume review in a small group discussion and activity.
