TMS 2012: Technical Program: High Performance Materials
March 11-15, 2012 • Orlando, FL

Among the myriad challenges to be explored in this track of the TMS Annual Meeting & Exhibition are materials solutions for challenging applications, be they challenges based on performance environment (e.g., bio-systems, high-temperature service), legislative mandates (e.g., lead-free solder), or design difficulties (e.g., impacts of scale).

PLANNED SYMPOSIA

Advances in Surface Engineering: Alloyed and Composite Coatings
This symposium is focused on the advances in the techniques, use of novel materials, characterization and property evaluation techniques in surface engineering using alloyed and composite materials. [Learn more]

Biological Materials Science Symposium
This symposium emphasizes the primacy of biological materials in the development of biomaterials and biomimetic materials. Biological materials comprise the inorganic and organic constituents of biological systems, whereas biomaterials are synthetic materials developed to replace, restore or augment biological materials. [Learn more]

Phase Stability, Phase Transformations, and Reactive Phase Formation in Electronic Materials XI
This is the eleventh in a series of TMS symposia addressing the stability, transformation, and formation of phases during the fabrication, processing, and utilization of electronic (optoelectronic) materials and devices. Topics of interests include phase stability issues surrounding microelectronics packaging technology, phase formation and integrated circuit technology, and the phase stability and morphological evolution of novel electronic (optoelectronic) materials. [Learn more]

Pb-Free Solders and Other Materials for Emerging Interconnect and Packaging Technologies
This symposium will address current research on microstructure-design, processing and properties of new and existing materials for emerging interconnect and packaging technologies, within the context of device/package performance and reliability. [Learn more]

Recent Developments in Biological, Electronic, Functional and Structural Thin Films and Coatings
The objective of this symposium is to provide a forum to stimulate new ideas, present and discuss fundamental and applied science of thin films and smart coatings, identify critical problems, provide promising solutions, and assess possible roadmaps. [Learn more]

Refractory Metals 2012
The purpose of this symposium is to provide a venue to present recent advances in the processing, characterization, properties, joining, mechanical properties, environmental effects, oxidation, irradiation effects, and basic metallurgy of refractory metals and alloys based on refractory metals. Papers that discuss the status of current refractory-metals technology are encouraged. Topical papers on recent applications of refractory metals and alloys are desired. [Learn more]

Wettability and Interfacial Phenomena between Metals and Ceramic/Refractory Materials
The aim of this symposium is to provide an opportunity for the discussion and the dissemination of knowledge on recent advances in wettability and interfacial phenomena related investigations for a variety of metal/ceramic (refractory) systems. [Learn more]
