Full Member Category
To be a full member of the society, a candidate must hold a baccalaureate degree from a recognized university in metallurgy, metallurgical engineering, materials science, materials engineering, or another science or engineering discipline related to the field
or the candidate must have at least five (5) years of experience and be a practicing professional in materials science and engineering or a closely related field.
Associate Member Category
While not possessing the academic or technical experience of a professional member, the associate member is active in fields that are sufficiently related to the advancement of materials science and engineering and its affiliated industries.
Retired Member Category
Retired membership is open to individuals who possess 20 years of continuous TMS membership, are 66 years of age or older, and who are fully retired from their career (including consulting).
Senior Member Category
Reflecting an achieved rank with the society, a senior member is a professional of vast experience both within the field and within TMS. Senior membership is open to individuals whose age and continuous years of TMS membership, when added together equal 100 or more, or retired professionals age 65 (or older) with 30+ years of continuous membership in TMS. Senior members do not pay membership dues and receive complimentary print subscriptions to
JOM: The Magazine and complimentary electronic subscriptions to
JOM technical articles. If a senior member wishes to receive the complete
JOM publication of record in print format (technical articles and
JOM: The Magazine content) by mail, they may purchase a subscription for $120 through the online TMS membership renewal form or by contacting a TMS membership representative at
members@tms.org or by phone at 1-724-776-9000.
Economic Hardship Member Category
Any individual who is dealing with a temporary setback in their career—job loss, employer funding cuts, working reduced hours, etc.—can apply for an economic hardship membership from TMS. This free membership allows you to use TMS resources to find a new position, to reach out to colleagues about new opportunities, and to stay up-to-date on research during this transition phase of your career, at no cost to you. Please contact the
TMS Membership Department, with a brief description of your situation to request this category of TMS membership.
