The TMS Foundation helps nurture the future of the minerals, metals, and materials fields by supporting scholarships and student programs. These activities not only remove barriers to education but encourage a deeper involvement in the greater materials community.

The following programs for students are funded in part or in full by the TMS Foundation:

Acta Materialia Inc. Undergraduate Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to deserving students to help lighten the burden of educational expenses. In addition, a travel stipend is available to encourage attendance of the TMS Annual Meeting & Exhibition where students can meet mentors and expand their own technical interests.

Learn more about this scholarship on the dedicated award page.

Kaufman CALPHAD Scholarship

The Kaufman CALPHAD scholarship provides additional support to undergraduate students as they pursue an education in metallurgical engineering, materials science and engineering, or a minerals processing/extraction. The travel stipend included with the scholarship also creates an opportunity for recipients to benefit further by attending the TMS Annual Meeting & Exhibition.

TMS Best Paper Contest

Being selected for a best paper award is a resume- and experience-building opportunity for students working toward a successful career after graduation. The contest provides participants the opportunity to showcase their work and to display original thought and creativity in the development of their essay.

For more information visit the TMS Best Paper Contest page.

TMS Division Scholarships

Each of the five technical divisions within TMS awards a scholarship to undergraduates studying in the division’s area of technical interest. These awards not only provide much-needed financial support but they promote professional growth and networking as recipients are invited to attend the division’s committee meeting or luncheon during the TMS Annual Meeting & Exhibition.

TMS Division Scholarships are doubled in value to the student recipients through the Battelle Matching Scholarship Program which matches the awarded amount dollar for dollar. Additionally, every student who receives a Battelle Matching Scholarship will also receive a Battelle Materials Graduate Student Award if they matriculates to graduate school to continue studies in a materials–related field.

For a complete listing of TMS Division Scholarships and more information on Battelle scholarship programs, visit the student awards web page.

TMS International Symposium on Superalloys Scholarship

This award for undergraduate and graduate students helps expose students to the latest research in their field by providing travel assistance to attend either the International Symposium on Superalloys or the Materials Science & Technology (MS&T) conference and includes financial assistance to help further their education.

Visit the dedicated award page for more information.

Travel Grants

By providing travel assistance to participate in events like the TMS Annual Meeting & Exhibition or Materials Science & Technology (MS&T) conference, these grants remove barriers towards attending professional conferences. This gives students an opportunity to explore the latest innovations in their fields, present their own work, and grow their future prospects by networking with potential mentors and employers.
