Standards in Additive Manufacturing

Standards in Additive Manufacturing

Date: Sunday, March 23
Time: 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Location: MGM Grand Las Vegas Hotel & Casino

Technical standards are the universal language that bridges communication gaps, essential in transactions between buyers and sellers, and equally crucial for researchers sharing their findings within the academic sphere in a uniform way. This workshop is designed to demystify the concept of standards, their origins, and their applications, with a focus on the additive manufacturing (AM) arena.

Instructors will emphasize globally acknowledged standards like those of ASTM/ISO and will touch upon other domains and standards bodies. With AM's history spanning just over three and a half decades, the call for standardized practices became apparent swiftly, a movement gaining momentum with the establishment of the ASTM F42 Committee on AM in 2009 as the first dedicated technical committee. Today, over 70 AM-specific standards by ASTM and ISO have been established, facilitating the industrial and commercial uptake of AM technologies.

Participants will gain insights into the current AM standards environment, the development process, the transformative role and accomplishments of the ASTM AM Center of Excellence and its strategies for expediting standardization, illustrative examples of research evolving into standards, and discussion of contributions from other standards development organizations impacting specific industries.

Who Should Attend?

This course is for anyone who wants to know more about the origin and use of standards in the materials field, particularly in the additive manufacturing sector. The target audience includes graduate students, experimental researchers, and industrial researchers.

Learning Objectives

Knowledge of standards, their development and use. The focus of the course is additive manufacturing and ASTM International/ISO, although extension to other technologies and standards development organizations will be made.
