Scope: Real time observations can provide information about materials behaviors, free from artifacts induced from conventional techniques. Emerging optical imaging techniques such as confocal laser microscopy and the thermal imaging furnace are enhanced with capabilities of controlling temperatures, atmospheres, and stresses, and measuring thermodynamic and kinetic data in situ. Emerging optical observation techniques, which have been only separately reported in the past, will be assembled in this special topic.
