This award marks an important moment in my career, which began in 1983 when I was admitted to a doctoral program at the then-USSR Academy of Sciences, followed by years working at the Academy and Moscow State University before relocating to Canada and then to the United States, where I held faculty positions at three universities, also worked at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and gained over a decade of experience in the private sector. Notably, in my Ph.D. thesis from 1987, I referenced works from 1975 and 1980 by two previous recipients of this award. I first met them in 1993 and 2002, and I met the third recipient in 2003—long before this award was established by TMS in 2012. It’s remarkable how small the world can be!
