Quote: I am very grateful to TMS and the awards selection committee for recognizing our paper with this prestigious award. Though my research directions have evolved over the years and my work has shifted from very basic toward very applied science, TMS has consistently remained a place to interact with world-class researchers in every and all aspects of materials science. This work was actually performed much earlier and written off as a “failed experiment” because we were attempting to obtain a fully recrystallized microstructure at the time. Only later did we realize what a gold mine these samples were when we began trying to understand the formation of extremely coarse grains in structural titanium forgings!

Quote: I am deeply honored to have our paper on beta annealing of Ti64 selected for the TMS-AIME Champion Mathewson Award and to join the company of prior recipients whom I so admire. I view Metallurgical and Materials Transactions as my “home” journal and TMS as my “home” technical society. Having published papers in MMT in each of the five decades of its existence, the Mathewson recognition holds a very special meaning to me. I also wish extend a sincere thanks to the editors and production staff at MMT. They have a very challenging job, which they have always accomplished in an outstanding manner from both professional and personal perspectives. Last, I thank our entire metals processing team, including colleagues and friends in our lab, in industry, and at various universities. Many of the papers which we have published in MMT have benefitted from interactions with them at TMS meetings and via other TMS-related activities.

Quote: As a youth, I dreamed of visiting with a metallurgist to learn more of the subject I loved. So, later being able to be a part of and serving a Society of metallurgists and materials and mineral engineers has been a joy. My friends are here at TMS: dear friends who have enriched my journey of exploration and learning. Having never sought positions or honors, I am surprised by the unlikely circumstance that they have somehow found me, but I attribute it entirely to either the kind encouragement, opportunities, or errors of my dear TMS friends. I am honored to be the 2021 face of service to TMS knowing well there are many who serve or have served devotedly and astutely including my friend and the award’s namesake Alex Scott. Lastly and most importantly, were it not for a previous recipient of this award, my former graduate advisor, colleague, and dear friend, I would never have embarked on my TMS odyssey: thank you, John Hager.

These novel alloys, with a dual population of strengthening precipitates with extreme coarsening and creep resistance, bring us a step closer to the goal of aluminum superalloys, with performances similar to those of nickel-based superalloys when comparing at the same homologous temperatures. Deploying these alloys in automotive and aerospace applications will lead to gains in energy efficiency, providing a contribution to the urgent need to reduce CO2 emissions globally.

Quote: In 2012 we started with a vision where new multiphase Gen 3 steels could be developed and then applied as replacement materials for existing materials with an Integrated Computational Materials Engineering approach. The ICME results were to provide a framework for new materials development and application through close integration of different methods spanning relevant length scales. This vision won a DOE grant in late 2012 which spanned 2013-2017. The MPMD award confirms this vision and the substantial advancements that we made both in computational sciences and the development of new experimental methods to provide data for the modeling components. Data also came from computations such as atomistic scale modeling for crystal plasticity (meso-scale) mechanics simulations. We believe that the Gen 3 steel ICME project was the first to incorporate a forming test to validate the performance of the predicted materials in a stamping process. The other aspect was the significant opportunities to teach and train graduate students and post docs. It is with great appreciation and humility that we accept the MPMD ICME award. TMS is presently the only professional society to which I belong. It has provided a wonderful home for someone like me from an industrial R&D environment where both fundamental and applied materials science and engineering are emphasized. I have been honored to have given numerous invited and keynote talks over the years and was honored with the 2014 Brimacombe medal. I have found no better a home for myself in any other professional society, and I owe TMS much. The other positive aspect to my membership has been the stellar support of the TMS staff…they are first among their peers.

Quote: TMS and Material Advantage have made an immense impact on my education and career path. I attended my first TMS Annual Meeting as a freshman. I loved learning about innovations and discoveries at the forefront of materials research and meeting fellow MSE students, professors, and industry professionals. That first experience cemented my love of materials science and ensured I would be a regular conference-goer. Since then, I have had the opportunity to present research posters, participate in the Undergraduate Speaking Contest, and enter the Materials Bowl Competition. I have also been involved in the Material Advantage chapter at Georgia Tech, where I am currently serving as Vice President. I enjoy getting other students involved in Material Advantage and showing them the benefits of a professional society. I plan to attend graduate school and obtain a Ph.D. in materials science with a focus in electronic materials. I am so thankful that TMS, Battelle, and the Functional Materials Division are investing in students like me.
