Recipients of this award may be eligible for the AIME Champion H. Mathewson Award and AIME Rossiter Raymond Memorial Award.

- The paper must be published in the preceding year's volume of JOM related to a light metals topic. Nominated papers should be based on the publication date, not the issue or online date.
- The paper must exemplify the application of science in solving a practical problem, and therefore must be technological in nature and present new and significant information.
- The style must be clear and concise.
