- Quote: TMS is a wonderful organization that provides a forum for scientists and engineers to discuss cutting edge research. I joined TMS as an undergraduate student and took full advantage of the learning and networking opportunities afforded to newcomers in the MSE field. I continue to see the impact that TMS has on the materials community and want to thank this society for investing in my professional and career development.
- Other: It was a real honor to attend the TMS annual meeting as an LMD Young Professional Award recipient. This was the first time I had a ‘behind the scenes’ look at the TMS and I have a newfound appreciation for the amount of work it takes to keep this organization running like a well-oiled machine! There were a few highlights for me at TMS 2015. First, was the Light Metals Division Committee meeting. At this LMD meeting I met my fellow awards recipients for the first time. While dining over very tasty lobster rolls, I think we all benefited from the financial discussions as well as dialogue around opportunities to encourage and retain volunteer participation in LMD endeavors. Directly after the LMD Committee meeting, members of the PD-Ad Hoc Professional Development Committee got together to discuss our progress and outlook. My capacity in this group revolves around education—in particular, non-traditional short courses. I am excited at the opportunity to introduce topics around additive manufacturing, and data analytics (with materials engineering examples) from which the materials science community could benefit greatly. I might add, the food at this meeting was exceptional as well! My third highlight was exposure to the student research. Judging the LMD posters and seeing the other submissions, gives me great confidence in the next generation of materials engineers. They are doing cutting edge research for applications including medicine, energy storage, and transportation to name just a few and I am excited at what they will come up with next! Finally, the LMD luncheon where we received our awards, allowed me to make new connections in the world of light metals and hear more about student research (i.e. from the LMD scholars). It was a great opportunity to make new friends, catch up with former colleagues and end my time at TMS on a high note. Thank you TMS for this award.

- Quote: Materials innovation has become a game changer for all major industries. Faster implementation of the new technologies leads to a competitive advantage but it also requires in-depth materials knowledge and understanding. I am pleased to be a member of TMS for bringing talents from the industry and academia together where I can learn about the new materials technologies and discuss their implementations to the new products. TMS has also done an outstanding job for creating conferences on new technologies and developing young talents to be the future leaders to accelerate materials innovation.
- Other: I was honored to attend to TMS 2015 as the Young Leader Professional Development Award recipient under Light Metal Division. The conference was an absolute success from the start to end. The Light Metal Division members were welcoming and down-to-earth providing professional and technical guidance. The other Young Leader award recipients were very enthusiastic about TMS activities and general conference. Everyone was very excited to be a part of TMS 2015. It was emphasized in the meetings that nearly 50% of TMS members are from outside of the United States, where the diversity has become extremely important and TMS saw the value on investing diversity. I saw the importance of the diversity as I chaired a session where the speakers were from the US, China, Korea, Poland and Check Republic. I had a great time at TMS to meet all young professionals and seasoned experts in my field. As the new TMS president mentioned in his speech: TMS is a great place to meet with other professionals, learn and invest time in a environment that is culturally aware.

- Quote: The TMS has been giving me the opportunity to attend four annual conferences in the past five years. I have been actively involved in the technical paper presentations, poster competition, and interactions with other materials professionals around the world. From these experiences, I have learned a lot with respect to not only the technical knowledge, but also the communication skills with other professionals. I realize how important the networking between younger and senior members of TMS is for the career development of younger members.
- Other: It is such a great honor to be selected as one of the recipients of the TMS Young Leaders Professional Development Award under the Light Metal Division (LMD). I had attended four TMS conferences as a student, but participating as a Young Leader gave me an opportunity to involve in the conference in a different role, which further reinforces my interests in becoming a member of the Young Professionals Committee. The numerous social functions TMS offers to communicate with other young professionals around the world widen my vision beyond my current research field and provide potential collaboration opportunities. Judging at the student poster competition supplied a great platform to interact with the students, as well as a learning experience since they are all working on different research topics. Through participating various meetings and social functions, I realize that how much effort it requires to organize a conference efficiently. I believe that the Young Leaders Award Program truly fosters the leadership of young professionals in the materials society, encouraging them to take on more responsibility, and eventually the leading roles. In addition, TMS provides me with a unique opportunity to reconnect with many scientists and researchers around the world that I used to work with, who continue motivating and supporting me to pursue my career goals. Overall, the TMS 2014 Annual Meeting & Exhibition in San Diego has been an exceedingly fruitful and greatly enjoyable experience, and I look forward to participating in more Young Leader activities!

The award provided a comfortable and yet empowering atmosphere to allow those who may have be previously unaware of the service and leadership opportunities within TMS to become better acquainted with the society’s organizational structure and avenues for professional advancement. It was through this award that I was able to network with established researchers at universities, national laboratories, and industry. This interaction has led to additional professional development and research opportunities that I never knew existed. Moreover, the TMS officers, staff, and committee members were truly welcoming and motivational, constantly offering me informative and insightful advice both scientifically and professionally. Needless to say, I truly enjoyed this experience, and I look forward to actively participating and contributing to the future of TMS.

- Other: I am thankful for the opportunity to be a TMS Young Leader for the Light Metals Division (LMD) in 2007. I attended a number of events at the TMS 2007 Annual Meeting & Exhibition that I might not have if I was not a Young Leader, such as the TMS-AIME Awards Banquet and the Young Leaders Luncheon. It was especially beneficial to make contact with people outside my normal circle (light metals). I even made a couple of new contacts that may lead to future collaborations. It was good to see the emphasis that TMS is placing on the younger generation. The TMS board members made a deliberate effort to engage with the Young Leaders.

- Other: I wish to express my gratitude to the Light Metals Division (LMD) of TMS and Boyne Smelters Limited for providing me with the opportunity to attend the TMS 2005 Annual Meeting & Exhibition at San Antonio. The Young Leaders program has opened my eyes up to how the organization is run and what opportunities exist to get involved. I was able to participate in a wide cross section of meetings including the Reactive Metals, Powder, Student, and Education technical committee meetings, Board of Directors meeting, and the LMD Council meeting and luncheon. It was a real pleasure to meet a large number of the very committed and experienced people that make TMS run. The Young Leaders Luncheon and undergraduate/graduate student poster competitions are excellent initiatives by TMS that complemented the young leader experience well. The technical sessions and numerous informal discussions with TMS professionals from across industry and academia were also a major highlight. The TMS Aluminium Smelting Cell Retrofitting and Cell Operations short course, which included a tour of Alcoa's Rockdale plant, was simply first class.

- Other: It is a great honor to be chosen Young Leader Intern for the Light Metals Division (LMD) in 2006. Having attended the TMS Annual Meeting for the past three years, it was very interesting to see the mechanics going on behind the scenes. The Internship allowed me to participate in the Young Leaders Committee, the Aluminum Committee, and the Light Metal Division Council meetings. I also attended the TMS Board of Directors meeting, which gave me a good insight of the TMS strategic plans for the future. Finally, it allowed me to network with a lot of great people from the light metal industry and the material science. Overall, the experience was really beneficial, and I would like to thank TMS and the LMD for selecting me.

- Other: In my opinion, being a TMS Young Leader Intern is perhaps the quickest route for a young professional to get introduced to the structured yet intricate organizational machinery that is associated with TMS. The Young Leader Internship Program is providing me with just the appropriate platform that I was seeking. While attending the 2005 TMS Annual Meeting & Exhibition at San Francisco this year, I quickly found that the title ribbon attached to my name tag that displayed “Young Leader” could indeed go a long way! In addition to having easy access to the division meetings, luncheons, and receptions, I was encouraged to attend other Administrative/Technical Committee meetings by the coordinator (TMS Membership Services). As a result, I was able to interact with other TMS members and staff, who are already involved with the organization of activities related to the technical programs, membership development, and continuing education. At the beginning of each meeting, the chair would always introduce me to the rest of the members as a Young Leader, which helped in clearing the initial hesitation and apprehensiveness that lay within my mind. During the meetings, apart from being able to follow the current proceedings closely, I also received the minutes of the previous meetings, both of which enabled me to get a fair idea about how the business was conducted annually at TMS. The luncheons and mixer sessions provided the right kind of atmosphere for asking specific questions and volunteering my participation in the different committees, and these were handled by the senior members very well and with exceptional enthusiasm. It is needless to say that at all times, I felt comfortable and gladly-received, and that I was already becoming a part of the TMS family.

As a prestigious Society in materials science and engineering, TMS provided me with an opportunity to get involved in a lot of activities in the Society. Attending committee meetings gave me a keen sense of key issues of scientific research and engineering applications at present time. The TMS Young Leader Intern Program gave me a chance to interact with fellow Young Leaders and experienced TMS members, which I found very beneficial. I am very grateful to TMS for giving me this great opportunity. I am looking forward to serving TMS for my whole professional life.

- Other: I was very honored to be selected as a Light Metals Division (LMD) Young Leader Intern for 2004. It was very interesting and helpful to see how a professional organization is run by being part of the TMS 2004 Annual Meeting & Exhibition from the inside. At this meeting I had the chance to attend a lot of activities, including: LMD Council meeting, LMD Luncheon, and AIME & TMS Award Banquet. I also attended a lot of sessions, including the Cast Shop and Recycling sessions. TMS also gave me the opportunity to enlarge my professional network on an international scale. This meeting in Charlotte was a great experience for me and I really look forward for the fall meeting in New Orleans and to be involved in the Society.

- Other: First, I would like to express my gratitude to the TMS Light Metals Division (LMD) for selecting me as one of their Young Leader Interns for 2003. My experiences as a Young Leader Intern provided me with new perspectives on my materials career and role in professional societies such as TMS. I was fortunate to have been able to participate in the TMS Board of Directors Meeting, President’s Reception, Young Leaders Committee meeting and Tutorial Luncheon Lecture, and the LMD Council meeting and luncheon. Furthermore, I became a member of and participated in the joint TMS-ASM Nuclear Materials and Corrosion and Environmental Effects Committee meetings. In the past, I only saw slices of TMS overall and, without this Young Leader Intern program, would not have been exposed to the diversity of TMS in terms of technical topical areas and the various national and international academic, industrial, and government communities that we serve. I look forward to continuing my professional relationship with TMS and the rest of the Young Leader Interns over the next year and in my career to follow.

- Other: It was great to be able to come to the TMS 2000 Annual Meeting & Exhibition—once again "thank you" to the Young Leaders program and the Light Metals Division for their support! Sunday was very busy attending multiple meetings—Young Leaders Committee, Aluminium Committee, and Light Metals Division Council. Through the remainder of the week I also attended the meetings of the Public and Governmental Affairs (PGA) Committee and the Process Modelling Analysis and Control (PMAC) Committee. I found the PGA committee meeting very interesting as I had little understanding of how government policy and spending is influenced—in the U.S. and also I'm embarrassed to confess in New Zealand too! Now I have more understanding of how it works in the U.S. and a motivation to find out how it works in New Zealand. Through my presence at the meeting, the committee felt prompted to determine if their focus was solely on the United States or more international. At the PMAC, they were keen for new committee members, particularly in the control area, so I ended up joining and look forward to working with them.
