About the Instructor

Paraskevas Kontis is an associate professor of materials science and engineering at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Norway. His research focuses on enhancing the fundamental understanding of the structure-chemistry relationship in high-temperature alloys at the atomic level. This involves investigating the physical interactions between solutes and crystal defects, among other research interests. To achieve this, he utilizes microanalysis techniques, with a particular focus on atom probe tomography, in conjunction with scanning electron microscopy and diffraction methods. He works closely with various industrial partners to connect engineering challenges and materials structures at the atomic level.

Tim Smith

About the Instructor

Tim Smith graduated with a Ph.D. in materials science and engineering from The Ohio State University in 2016. After graduating, his pathways internship at NASA Glenn research center became a full-time position. His research focuses on high temperature alloy development and characterization. He has contributed to 37 peer-reviewed publications including journals such as Nature, Nature Communications, and Nature Communications Materials. His research has also produced 10 new technology reports and three utility patents. He recently received both the Early Career Achievement Medal in 2020 and the Exceptional Scientific Achievement Medal in 2022.

Repair Operations of Engine-Run Turbine Airfoils and Future Challenges in Superalloy Materials

The increasing number of civil and executive engines already in use and those to come require maintenance, repair, and overhaul activities to contain costs and make them more sustainable. Furthermore, the increasing operating temperatures in even harsher environments lower the lifetime of turbine components. After a short introduction to the topic, this short course will cover current engineering operations to refurbish, clean, FIC, patch and braze, redimension, and rejuvenation. Current challenges including e.g., REACh regulation, cleaner coatings, and potential use of additive manufacturing to improve service life will be commented. Some examples of the mechanical/environmental resistance of repaired components will also be given.

About the Instructor

Fernando Pedraza is full professor in chemistry of materials at the University of La Rochelle, France. With both academic and industrial experience, his main research topics involve the development of coatings and repair technologies for high temperature applications. He closely co-operates with academia and industry through various R&D programs (including EU-funded). Presently, Pedraza has published more than 200 scientific and technical papers, is inventor of various patents, and acts as consultant for various industries and public agencies.
