Your Skills and Expertise
To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications:

  • Ph.D. degree or higher in a science or engineering discipline (completed and verified prior to start) from an accredited institution Three (3) years of materials research experience in a private, public, government or military environment Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:
  • Ph.D. degree in Materials Science, Ceramic Engineering, Inorganic Chemistry or related discipline, with an emphasis on ceramic materials, from an accredited institution
  • Five (5) years of industry research experience in the areas of inorganics and ceramics materials

The Critical Materials Institute at the Ames Laboratory, a Department of Energy National Laboratory affiliated with Iowa State University, is searching for qualified Postdoctoral Research Associates.

The postdoctoral researchers will perform innovative research on critical materials challenges. Multiple candidates are sought for research in the following areas:

Magnetism and magnetic materials including permanent magnets, with and without rare earth elements, as well as other magnetic materials Combinatorial synthesis and high-throughput characterization of materials.

Candidates are encouraged to specify the area of interest in their application cover letters. For both positions, the candidates will be responsible for design, synthesis, processing, additive manufacturing and characterization of materials using a suite of capabilities at Ames Laboratory. As part of a U.S. Energy Innovation Hub, the candidates are expected to work with principal investigators, Ames Laboratory scientists and other collaborators in national laboratories, industry and universities to develop approaches for producing magnetic materials, especially permanent magnets, with minimal or no critical elements.

Other duties include writing reports, publishing and presenting results, and supervising students. The ideal candidates can communicate effectively to a wide variety of audiences, are comfortable working in a cross-cutting, multidisciplinary research environment, and are self-motivated individuals willing to take initiative and leadership of research problems. The Department of Materials Engineering at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver campus) seeks a promising individual for a tenure-track position in the Educational Leadership stream at the rank of Assistant Professor of Teaching with background in the field of materials extraction (in exceptional cases a tenure stream appointment at the rank of Associate Professor of Teaching may be considered). The anticipated start date of the position is January 1, 2022, or as soon as possible thereafter.

Over its long history, the Department of Materials Engineering at UBC (referred to as the Department) has distinguished itself with excellence in teaching and research in materials processing. The successful candidate will take a leading role in enhancing the teaching and learning environment in the Department. This includes the curriculum development and delivery of courses (core and technical electives) in Materials Engineering, design and mentorship of capstone design projects, the development and renewal of undergraduate laboratories and the further enrichment of the learning experience of students. The successful candidate will be expected to teach courses related to materials extraction (examples might include thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid flow, pyrometallurgy, and hydrometallurgy) at the undergraduate and graduate levels in Materials Engineering, while fostering an inclusive educational environment to support and encourage students.
