Keywords: Alloy phases, magnesium
Scope: Alloy and process design to control second phase particle distribution is a key aspect of the future of magnesium alloys. Successful introduction of second phases can improve mechanical response, either by increasing the strength or altering the deformation mode activity. However, these second-phase particles also dramatically influence other material properties, notably corrosion and creep behavior. This special topic is a holistic review of advances in the understanding of second-phase effects on magnesium alloy behavior.
